Wolverine #1 - Rogue Logan Part 1 of 4

5

Wolverine's gone through some big changes and isn't the man he used to be. This definitely isn't the Wolverine you're used to.

Note: WOLVERINE #1 is on sale February 5.

The Good

Here's the thing, I like Wolverine. Seems most would agree with that. The problem is, we've had quite a few different Wolverine stories over the years. There's nothing really wrong with that. Many have been really great but how many times can we read about Wolverine being the best there is at what he does?

The good news is, things are changing. If you've read the previous volume by Paul Cornell and Alan Davis, you know Wolverine has lost his healing factor. Think about how that alone changes who he is and how he would operate. He can't fight the way he used to. This alone is a fascinating idea. When I first heard the idea, I was highly skeptical but wait until you see what he's up to here.

Some time has passed since the last issue of the previous volume. Wolverine is hanging out with some new friends. This is one of those situations where we're thrown into the action and have to wait to see how the characters got to this point. It's going to be interesting to see this next phase for Wolverine and the fact that Cornell gets to continue the story he started in the previous volume.

More importantly, I can't wait to see how people react to Wolverine's actions in this issue.

Ryan Stegman's art is always great to see. It was unfortunate when it was announced he wouldn't be on SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN any longer but seeing it here is impressive. His Wolverine is a beast. The new costume design is great and it's always a joy to see a slightly shorter Wolverine when standing next to other familiar characters. You can really get a sense of what he's been through in the previous series and having Stegman follow Davis is enough to keep your mouth watering.

The Bad

There will likely be some readers with some problems with this issue. Mixing things up is a great thing to see characters get shaken up for a fresh or different take to happen. This is something we need to see more of in order to fully understand what the complete story is.

The Verdict

You think you know who Wolverine is? Paul Cornell and Ryan Stegman might argue with you. After his brutal defeat and loss of his healing factor in the previous WOLVERINE volume, this is where we get to find out what's next. This isn't the Wolverine you're used and that's a good thing. Change is always welcome and we are now left in suspense, waiting to see what the next move will be. Stegman's art is phenomenal and you'll love seeing all the brutal details he puts into every page. People will be talking about this issue and you don't want to miss out.

So if wolverine doesn't have his healing factor, what happens when his claws come out of his hands? Those wounds would never heal properly when he retracts them...

Am I the only one who thinks that cancelling a book... and then releasing it again with the exact same creative team and calling it issue 1 is kinda cheap?

@tommythehitman: Aside from the writer, it's actually a different creative team. I wouldn't call it cheap, I would call it unnecessary. It could of been just as easy to be a .NOW with the #1 in the upper right corner to signify a great jumping on point. I'm still about to go buy this on the 5th though xD

@allstarsuperman: How are they handling the adamantium poisoning? IIRC, the process that was used to install the metal is different from Bullseye's, and his healing factor was the only thing keeping himself from dying from it. Of course, I'm not as up to date on Wolvie like I used to be.

I could be way wrong, but I think Dr strange took care for it or something, "magical plot device"

So how is he still in the X-Men if he's no longer a mutant?

I still don't like how Marvel relaunched it a month later with a new #1. It would've been just as easy to call it #13.NOW and slap a #1 on it like they've been doing with the other .NOW books. I'll still buy it though; this seems to be an interesting take on Wolverine.

As far as I'm aware, he's still a mutant and still has his heightened sense of smell, his claws, etc. It's just the healing factor that's gone.

Beast made pills for Wolverine to take IIRC, so that the adamantium poisoning won't kill him.

Sounds pretty cool from this review. I'm not a Wolverine fan but I've always respected the character. This concept sounds interesting particularly if it makes him look even better at what he does. Hopefully people enjoy this story.

I'm guessing that will likely happen at some point, in a 'last option / no way out' kinda way. Gonna be messy!

@tommythehitman: Bru, Warlock, Longshot, Prodigy, Danger, Ms. Marvel, Deadpool, Fantomex, Mimic.

Not to be a jerk, but didn't they say that Broo was a mutant because he's not a mindless killing machine? And something similar for Warlock. I think Danger was somehow a mutated AI as well, and they've made a lot of exceptions for de-powered mutants (like Prodigy, Jubilee, etc.).

You're still right, though. They let a lot of non-mutants in based on their ties to the team.

Agreed. They have been fairly weak. I think a writer actually caught on to how cool it would be to see a Wolverine who actually "uses" his martial prowess and earns the moniker "best there is" on that and not his damage soak.

Oh come now. Have faith. I see this as seeing Wolverine earn his martial pedigree. It could prove disastrous, or a brilliant way to make Wolverine rely on this skill and not his damage soak.

@super_soldierxii: Hey man, it's kind of hard to have faith with how dreadfully weak and boring the series has been so far during Marvel NOW, but you do bring up a fair point in regards to remaking the standard around Wolverine's martial talent. Cornell does have a pretty great opportunity to reestablish that Wolverine can actually utilize his prodigious martial talent, and it is an important addition along with the ludicrous healing factor and adamantium skeleton to make him the best there is. If Cornell plays it right, he could set a golden standard for Marvel editors and writers to follow regarding his skill. Something of a Manifest Destiny type story just on a much, much wider scale. If Cornell does do something like that, I can forgive the man for the last couple of months of his out of character Wolverine. Might even write him a thank you letter :D
