FF #16 - For All We Have and Are

5

Best final issue ever.

The Good

Sigh.

I've dreaded this moment ever since it was announced that this series would be coming to an end. The only thing that makes bearable is how incredibly wonderful this issue is.

It's no secret how much I dig Mike Allred's art and Laura Allred's colors. Knowing they'd be working on a series with Matt Fraction, it was the the coolest thing. I'll admit I wasn't completely sold on the idea of a series with Scott Lang and the others (even though I did think She-Hulk and Medusa were always cool). But I had faith in the creative team. With that first issue, I immediately fell in love with the idea behind the series. When Fraction had to step back to work on other things, Lee Allred swooped in and took over with ease.

This issue is what the series has been building up towards. Scott Lang vs Doctor Doom? Those not reading the series might be saying, "Really?!?" Along with this great encounter, every single character in the Future Foundation has been a joy to read. I could go on and on about how great everything is here but chances are, you've already read my thoughts in the previous issues' reviews.

To top it all off, we get a glorious send off at the end in a back up story by Lee Allred and Karl Kesel with art by Joe Quinones, Mike Allred (inks) and Laura Allred.

The Bad

What do you think? It's the last issue. That is the absolute worst.

The Verdict

All good things, etc, etc. We've been trying to prepare for the end of this series. What makes it easier to handle is the fact that it's such an amazing and fun issue. I can't remember feeling this much joy in reading a comic before. Everyone involved has given us such a mix of comedy and extremely dark themes and turned it all into something wonderful. I will truly miss this series and all the characters within. Sure they'll likely pop up elsewhere but it won't be the same. I wish I could personally thank everyone involved for such a fun series. Bravo everyone. Thanks for sixteen truly fantastic issues.

Note: Geez, I actually got a little teary-eyed typing that last line.

Oh, this is going to be a hard one to read for me. I adored this series every issue brightened my day when I read them. I'm very happy to see such a glowing review, If the issue is as good as you say it is it will take some of the sting of losing such amazing book.

Confession: I haven't read an issue (bought them all though) since #13. Somehow, I rationalized that if I didn't read the last three issues, the series wouldn't truly ever end. A silly notion I know, but having those three issues left to read fills me with unmitigated glee every time I think about it.

Wait, last issue? why? this series is great. It's such a shame that such a good book got overlooked by the general public.

@kilomac29: not silly. I did the same thing the first time Futurama was canceled.

@zbvmx: Robinson has said that Darla and Scott will appear in his Fantastic Four run so that gives me some hope.

Brilliant send-off, this oddball team of heroes was the most endearing book this past year. On to Silver Surfer with the hope that it'll be just as refreshing and unique as FF was.

am I the only one that thinks having Doom's brain patterns all over the internet is a really bad idea? My mind immediately jumped to Superior Spider-Man.

Where will Scott Lang go now, (I haven't read it yet), since he is the star of the Ant Man movie played by Paul Rudd?

At least Allred is on Silver Surfer... and Surfer seems like Doctor Who now. Marvel's Doctor Who. WEEE!

I like the idea of a Doctor Who like Marvel series, but the preview was a major letdown.

Loved this series, it really was brilliant. The art, which I wasn't a fan of at first, grew on me, and seemed to match the feel of the writing perfectly, I look forward to seeing more of these characters in the future.

In saying that, I wasn't a huge fan of how they portrayed or treated Doom, especially in this last issue. Some writers get him wrong for me - which is to be expected with such a major figure and so many different writers approaching the character - and this portrayal just didn't sit right with me. Not that this was a big enough deal to ruin such a great series or anything.

Overall, awesome series, and this final issue totally does it justice.

I kinda thumbed through this at the shop without really reading it, so it's possible I'm missing some context here, but HOLY S***! I don't think I've ever seen anyone flat-out dominate Dr. Doom on so many levels the way Scott does here. He almost literally made Doom his b*tch.

This is going to go down as one of my favorite runs of all time. Didn't read any of the F4 Now stuff but FF is an absolute masterpiece. This volume not only introduced me to the bliss of the Allreds' art but to a lot of fantastic characters that add up to a lot more than just 4. There really aren't enough good things to say about this issue which makes such a short review understandable. This volume was also my first time reading FF. Special thanks to comicvine for turning me on to such an amazing comic.

Scott scores a win against Doom with about a dozen or so issues of prep! Take that Doom ya big jerk!

@g_man: I really love FF, but to me this issue alone was okay. I think I would give 3 stars. Scott Lang's poetic dialogue dragged on too long and reading the last few panels after the fight with Doom confused the heck out of me due to reading Fantastic Four. I had to check back with Fantastic Four to make sure I'm not reading the same dialogue, even though some panels were the same. So, it was tough to get through it. I don't know but I may have the feeling the sentimental of the series ending took over you from reviewing this issue. But despite of me not liking this issue, I did love the series very much and I'm gonna miss it. It was very unique series from others and way much better than Fantastic Four. Scott Lang, She-Hulk, Darla (She-Thing, silly name, but great character!) and Medusa had great chemistry as a team, I never expected they would.
