Reads more like an Uncanny X-Force: Deadpool miniseries

Right, well, when I read issue #50 I was under the impression "this is just a one-off lucky outing for Daniel Way" and then I picked up #51 and was surprised again. Now #52 is out and the title manages to keep the consistent tone of not being crap.

This story so far has been great fun and also quite mature and serious - considering it's from the same writer who did such "mature" plots as Deadpool becoming a pirate (yeah, I know I keep referring to that but, hey, it was stupid). And the thing is if the book continues with this new style, then I will indeed continue buying it. The humor of Deadpool is putting him in situations where his silliness can show, not putting him in silly situations which until now I don't think Way really got.

First off, who knew Daniel Way could write a pretty good Typhoid Mary? After ruining Bullseye, Venom, Ghost Rider and Deadpool, he was the very last person I'd ever expect to write a competent and sexy Typhoid Mary. Mind you, part of the appeal may be down to Alé Garza's art who draws a truly beautiful Typhoid Mary at times. Garza has a weird style that at times is channelling Humberto Ramos and at other times is nothing like Ramos. Just look no further than the sequence of Mary torturing Bob - Mary is outright oozing in sexiness and Bob is as pitiful as ever. While we're on art, let me point out to Dave Johnson's almost traditional brilliant cover.

Story-wise, I don't like to give away any big plot points but all the stuff we've seen so far comes into play from X-Force to Kingpin to Daken. The only real problem I had is that Typhoid Mary disappears mid-story without explanation. The end of the issue has two rather big shocking twists that could prove interesting since they both would have long-term ramifications for the characters involved.

So, again, if you hate Dan Way's Deadpool like I, then this story has definitely been a somewhat puzzling change of pace. It reads less like Deadpool's ongoing and reads more like an Uncanny X-Force: Deadpool miniseries. Let us cross our fingers and hope that this is Dan Way finally learning and we can expect this level of quality from now on.
