@cagnazzo82: Marvel isn't doing anything new though. James Rhodes was Iron Man, Bucky was Captain America, Ben Reilly was Spider-Man, and there's probably a large handful of others I'm forgetting between now and the 90s.
To be fair, Captain America is a true mantle character (I wrote a piece about this 4 years ago). While Steve Rogers was the first and longest Cap, numerous other people have worn the costume and taken over his book.
As for Thor, even though I've said multiple times that I was never a big fan up until Jason Aaron took over, which is fine because everyone likes something different, whoever wields the hammer is worthy to be Thor and there's been about a dozen people in the past who have done so. At some point, in the run with this character, someone else has to wield the power of Thor. You can't give a character that power with that inscription and not have someone else take over for a bit.
I'm glad Wolverine is staying dead because in the past decade, Marvel has had a terrible track record with killing off characters and bringing them back a year later: see almost everyone that's died. As for X-23 taking over the role, she's paying homage to him, as far as the character goes. As for being called "Wolverine," it'll drive up sales.
Thor fans do have a right to hate someone else take over the role. Have your anger, that's fine, but there needs to be more people like yourself and cerial442 expressing why. There's people in this thread just screaming from the mountaintop and that can come off as crazy.
All-in-all, hating this concept won't matter in the long run because Odinson will eventually become Thor again and Jane Foster will go back to obscurity. See: Steve Rogers coming back from the dead and becoming Cap again, Peter Parker getting his mind back from Doc Ock, and every mantle change in the history of comics.
Marvel doesn't need comics to be sustainable. That's the bottom line. People will still buy comic book posters, clothes, toys, games, and movies whether or not the comics exist. They do big things like this to get new eyes on their products. Most non-comic book readers know nothing about Thor, but right now, they know a woman took over and maybe that got them reading the comics. Without new readers, the industry will die.
It's comics. It's circular. Everything goes back to the constant eventually.
All your points are true and fair, as a long time fan of Thor (been reading since the early 80's) this feels different from the Eric Masterson or even Thor Frog days, by stripping Thor of his mantle and branding him "Unworthy" they have intentionally/unintentionally dishonored him and his legacy, but what is adding fuel to the flame is that for the last 14 months, 3 weeks and X number of days Marvel/Aaron have not told us what it was that Fury said to cause this slight.
Your right Thor Odinson will return to his rightful standing but the first step is deal with the root cause. Speaking for only myself I'm just frustrated that there keeping Thor from taking the fist step to his redemption.
And no this isn’t about Thor losing the hammer, it’s about trying to pander to the growing female demographic of comic book readers on the basis of making a ‘big female hero’ with a ‘male mantle’ that only demeans both Thor and Fem Thor as well as rely on a gimmick. And I’m sick and tired of the support this book is unjustifiably getting as well as the fools who fail to see it for what it is. Let them cling to this false Thor if they want to, I want no part of it because I’m an actual Thor fan who likes the character for who he is
