Is DBZ ACTUALLY one of the best animes ever?

At the end of the day your links do not support your theory. If there truly was a huge dividing line where in comes to Dragon Ball Z it would not have an average of over 8/10, that indicates that people voting it very low are in the extreme minority.

Dragon Ball Z is an Anime with huge exposure that most Anime fans are familiar with, so voters on MyAnimeList should be varied, and definitely not limited to mainstreamers with little Anime experience who just fondly remember the series from their childhoods.

I don't know who these "most people" are, or how you managed to get a consensus from them, but most people I know who started watching it at ~19 years of age ended up liking it a lot (though some disliked it until they'd seen like 30+ episodes).

If you hold a vote in two different types of places with different demographics you can often get opposite results.

Yes they do. My "theory" wasn't that Dragon Ball was awful, if not majority of the ratings would be 1/10s. It was that most without the nostalgia see it as average. Most people on MAL would not even bother watching it because of the length, so majority of the votes already come from fans who grew up with it and even then it doesn't get much of a boost from that.

The easiest way to see that is to go to the forums. Make a poll asking the regular users if they think it's the best anime and you'll see those who didn't grow up with it giving it poorer reviews, and those who did having nostalgia as one of the main reasons. Even now you'd be hard-pressed to find supporters who don't start out with "I loved it as a kid" or "this was my childhood."

It's good in its own right.

Nah, anime DBZ > HST anime easily. Anime DBZ was entertaining, and had so many bad ass moments. The manga however was boring, wouldn't even rank it.

let's not get all hissy here, everyone has their own tastes, for instance, I can't stand Bruce Falconer, but love Dope to death, check out "My Funeral" if your in the mood.

One of the best animes? Not really, one of the best mangas? still no, but it is somehow good and popular for its characters and memorable moments...

No. But I find it to easily be one of the most influential and iconic animes, if not the most iconic anime ever.

Well i was gonna come here and say that i would be to afraid to say i didn't think it was one of the best, but since everybody else is kind of crapping on it i guess i can too.

@u_wot_m8: well,at least the new DBX game will have some good OST, it'll probably have ArkSys's star composer Daisuke Ishiwatari, working on it, check out some of his works if you want to be blown away.

Its one of the only "not weeb" animes and its still the best anime i ever watched. Its the best one in the genre, thats for sure.

Influential and Iconic? Yes. The best? Subjective. I personally prefer Fist of the Northstar more.

Dragon Ball is a legend. Akira Toriyama is the God of Shounen.

With my nostalgic glasses on, is my favorite anime. Nostalgia glasses off, is impossible is ingrained to my brain, but the Buu saga wasn't exactly good I will admit, and the filler scene was godly annoying. The dub voices can be inconsistent, being good to they clearly had one take. Not to mention there are other shounen anime that do manage to flesh out their character better like One Piece or Hitman Reborn. That being said nostalgia glasses are too strong and honestly from a critical standpoint, all the way till the Buu saga it was a 9/10. The Buu saga was a 7/10

It's not the best but it was competent in most areas. The plot doesn't implode on itself because the basic premise is simple: Aliens try to destroy, heroes stop them. And it was enjoyable all the way through.

It was also important in inspiring more modern anime. So while it in comparison to today's standards isn't the best I'd say it's among the most important

I don't even have much nostalgia for it. I liked it, but at the time I first saw it, it had some really stiff competition for my viewing time in the form of Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin.

I didn't think it was the best then, and I have a much lower opinion of it now.

DBZ is complete crap. Some say it paved the way for modern anime. I say it's the origin of some of the worst story-telling tropes to plague the medium.

I find a lot of the hype comes from Nostalgia. I tried re watching it not long ago, and found it pretty terrible

I like dragon ball but as it stands it is not about story but about fighting.

Still Ill always like dragon ball for its fights and characters but as for story it’s pretty lacking.

The villains in dragon ball are also just copied and paste. Frieza has a charm to him but every other villain is pretty similar and are just evil for the sake of it. If they aren’t just evil for the sake of it they are evil for a stupid reason.

I would say yes it is one of the best anime ever. It is arguably the best shonen.

No, I saw a few of the beginning episodes and it was one of the worst things I have ever watched. The power dynamics make no sense and the characters seem to be able to improve to a new level every season the improve beyond that point exponentially
