  • Created in 1958 by editor Julius Schwartz, writer Gardner Fox, and artists Murphy Anderson (costume design), Gil Kane (cover), Mike Sekowsky (penciler), Bernard Sachs (inker) and Carmine Infantino (penciler in later development).

    Commissioned together with Space Ranger as two new science fiction heroes for DC Comics: one from the present, and one from the future. Based on Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Gullivar Jones and Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars.

  • Created in 1939 by writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane. Parodied in his own TV show. Restored to his dark roots by writer Dennis O'Neil and artist Neal Adams. Significantly developed by writer/artist Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli, and also in his animated TV series by writer Paul Dini and artist Bruce Timm, who were inspired by Tim Burton's movie.

    Based on Black Bat (disputed), Doc Savage, Harry Houdini, Leonardo da Vinci, The Phantom, Scarlet Pimpernel, The Shadow, Sherlock Holmes, Spring-Heeled Jack, Zorro (notably actor Douglas Fairbanks in the silent film The Mark of Zorro), and the mystery film The Bat Whispers, an adaptation of the stage play The Bat.

    His sidekick, Robin, is based on Robin Hood and his Merry Men, such as Will Scarlet. His nemesis, The Joker, is based on Victor Hugo's character Gwynplaine (notably actor Conrad Veidt in the film The Man Who Laughs).

    His name, Bruce Wayne, is a reference to Scottish patriot Robert the Bruce and US Army officer Anthony Wayne.

    Based on Morpheus and Oneiros, one the god and the other the personification of dreams in Greek mythologhy, on The Sandman, a mythical character in European folklore, on Wesley Dodds, the first Sandman in DC Comics, created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Bert Christman, and on Garrett Sanford, the second Sandman in DC Comics, created by writer Joe Simon and writer/artist Jack Kirby.

    His look is based on Neil Gaiman himself, on Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy, on The Cure's frontman Robert Smith, on ballet dancer Farukh Ruzimatov, and on actor Conrad Veidt as Cesare The Somnambulist in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

  • Created in 1941 by writer Mort Weisinger and artist George Papp as an imitation of Batman. Canonical origin set by writer/artist Jack Kirby and writer France Ed Herron. Significantly developed by writer Dennis O'Neil and artist Neal Adams, and later by writer/artist Mike Grell. Revived by writer Kevin Smith and artist Phil Hester, and revamped again by writers such as Andy Diggle and Jeff Lemire, and artists such as Jock and Andrea Sorrentino.

    Based on Robin Hood (notably actor Errol Flynn in the film The Adventures of Robin Hood) along with Batman himself, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Robert Louis Stevenson's novel The Black Arrow, the serial film The Green Archer, and other comicbook characters such as Golden Arrow.

    His name, Oliver Queen, suggests the word "quiver".

Also, his assistant Oberon is based on Kirby himself, his partner Big Barda on Kirby's wife Roz and the look of actress Lainie Kazan, his manager Funky Flashman on editor Stan Lee, and his archenemy Darkseid on Adolf Hitler, Richard Nixon and the look of actor Jack Palance. Also, Granny Goodness is based on the look of actress Reta Show, Morgan Edge on actor Kevin McCarthy, Glorious Godfrey on evangelist Billy Graham, and Metron on physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and on Leonard Nimoy's portrayal of the Star Trek character Spock.

    His name, Scott Free, is a pun on the phrase "scot-free". His son, Jacob, created by writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads, is named after Kirby's birth name.

    His look is based on swimmer/actor Johnny Weissmuller, who played Tarzan, and actors Douglas Fairbanks, Harold Lloyd, and also Christopher Reeve, who played Superman on silver screen. The name of his alter ego, Clark Kent, is a combination of the names of actors Clark Gable and Kent Taylor.
