There are many similarities between Darth Vader and Doctor Doom. The father and son relationship between Darth vader and Luke is similar to Darkseid and Orion from New Gods. I don't think the Joker is the greatest villain in comics but I don't think Lobo is either. If you say the amount of people a person kills makes them a better villain then we might as well create an omnipotent guy who cannot be stopped whatsoever. And the fact that the Joker isn't just someone who goes around killing people because he likes it is probably why people like him, he's more complex than that.

Joker. Batman has always relied on fear and intimidation to stop criminals. But the Joker is someone entirely different. The Joker is someone who's not afraid of him.

See? He knew full well Batman just didn't have it in him to kill. He played chicken with Batman and won.

It's his character, his personality, his motive.

He is one of the most unique villains in comics.

He doesn't kill for a purpose. He doesn't kill do that he can rule the world.

He kills because its funny.

That's what makes him terrifying.

Anyway, not many other villains came up from nothing quite like Joker did. Guys like Luthor and Dr. Doom are wealthy and powerful. Guys like Brainiac and Darkseid are alien conquerors. Joker? A lower-class guy who went crazy. Now, with little-to-no "in-between" stage, the dude has helicopters with his face on them.

@darksideanime: I'm well aware that Doom is a great villain in his own right. (He's pretty much my favorite Marvel villain) I'm just saying that it's impressive that Joker became a villain in the same league as Doom in way less time.

I've always considered The Joker one of the greatest villains not because of what he was capable but because he's Batman's villain. To any other superhero he might be just another baddie, but to Bats he's the perfect foil.
