We were given to understand that Laufey had fallen far in power by the time of the first Thor, his realm and powers were a shadow of what they once were. The power of the Casket of Ancient Winters could have directly increased his abilities to the point where he could match Odin, much like Surtur with his crown.

Actually makes less sense now that you mention it. The dark elves vs Asgardian war are eons ago like it mentioned in Thor the dark world, and the Asgardian defeated them with Bor leading the charge. But after Dark elves went away thousands of years and came back, and they still able to defeat the Asgardian and passed through their defense no problem. So Asgardian has to technological improvement for thousands of years? Wut?!

Human Civilization as we know it is only about 6,000 years old, and industrialization started in the earnest only in the 1800s. And look how far we have come since cavemen time. And yet Asgard is taken over by tech from thousands of years ago. Imagine the Pentagon get taken over by the flintstones LOL!
