New Wonder Woman Costume Revealed

Get ready for another edition of the Great Wonder Woman Costume Debate to begin.

The last time Wonder Woman got a new costume (pants and a jacket), there was quite a commotion. People are often resistant to change. It turns out in WONDER WOMAN #41, on sale in June after Convergence, she'll be getting a new look. HitFix has revealed the solicit for the issue.

WONDER WOMAN #41

Written by MEREDITH FINCH

Art and cover by DAVID FINCH and

JONATHAN GLAPION

THE JOKER Variant cover by BRIAN BOLLAND

On sale JUNE 17 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US RATED T

Retailers: This issue will ship with two covers. Please see the order form for details.

A daring new direction begins with the arrival of a brand-new villain! But while he may be new to us, he’s not new to the world he seeks to tame. And speaking of villains, Donna Troy’s quest to destroy Wonder Woman ratchets up another gear (if that’s even possible!), while the games of the Gods bring dark portents to the ultimate Amazon!

Our immediate reaction is it has a lot of red. It really has a patriotic feel to it. Hopefully those wrist spikes are removable. Change is fine. There's no reason Wonder Woman shouldn't have more than one outfit. There's no reason she has to wear the same exact outfit every single time she goes out. We particularly dig Jason Fabok's recent weak in the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE.

No Caption Provided

Hopefully we haven't seen the last of that.

What do you think of the new outfit?

I love it. Anything's better than the skimpy, sexified jailbait outfits she's usually seen wearing. Gosh, must every woman in comics have big breast bulging out of her cups and thighs visible from the furthest star in the galaxy?

God that sounds incredibly stupid, as well as sexist. Wonder Woman has worn her swimsuit costume for 70 years, it's ICONIC and suits her. Stop trying to change what you don't understand.

Yuck.. Adding in gold and the boots becoming longer? ;|

Looks like they rolled up her JL:War, Pants on and battle skirt look into one design. And somewhere along the line gold got splashed over her silver gauntlets and tiara.

I honestly would like it.. if they take out the gold with silver, make the boots shorter and do away with the battle skirt thing/pants combo. I think only one would look alright.

You have to be a near Victorian age level prude to think of Diana's regular costume as "sexified jailbait."

If that's how you view it then you really don't know her character.

Gladiators might've fought with scanty clothing but soldiers serving in the army most certainly didn't.

Um, yes they did.

Do you know how hard it is to move in a full suit of armor? Many soldiers in ancient times preferred to fight with little to no clothing on just for mobility's sake.

Modern. Sexy. Iconic. I like the fact she looks more like a Warrior and that they have returned to gold (rather than silver) for the tiara. Way more effective that the Jim Lee design for Wonder Woman #600! imo.

Those paintings are romanticized depictions of events that took place hundreds of years prior. They didn't fight naked or even shirtless. That's a myth perpetuated by hollywood.

Ancient soldiers in Greece and elsewhere didn't wear armor unless they could afford it. Of course not all of them were naked, but a lot of them were. And like I said before, there were many who preferred to not wear armor.

No the greeks didn't typically fight nude. Regardless, Wonder Woman can afford armor and none is too cumbersome for her. If anyone should be half-naked, it should be Superman because he's invulnerable.

It's pretty likely some Greeks fought nude. The Greeks did a lot of things nude. Hell, the standard dress for ancient Cretan women for a time was this:

Even so, the armor the ancient Greeks wore covered roughly the same amount of skin as Diana's traditional costume.

Why does she even need armor though? Isn't she practically a goddess? And why am I getting into another ridiculous debate over realism in superhero comics? Nothing about superheroes is realistic in the first place.

This to me is much better than what we actually have. The real design looks like Wonder Woman had a psychotic mental breakdown, and is trying to wear all her outfits at once. Either that or she's wearing Superman's tights and trying to fit her armor over it.

THIS on the other hand actually looks like something Wonder Woman would wear.

I like it with the tights and knives gone, but actually kinda liked the gold. Except for the bracers, but I like those being a different color then the rest of the metal trimmings. The rest of the stuff is more or less decorative, but the bracers serve a function. Personally I'd like to see them in more of a dull irony color, and everything else gold.

The general idea's fine - I mean, when the Justice League series premiered in 2011, I thought the line-up was more than a little ridiculous looking. A bunch of guys with full-body suits and high collars or masks and then just one woman wearing what Wonder Woman was wearing? You'd really have to travel back in time a few decades at least to get anymore sexist seeming than that. The choker especially was just blatantly over the top. I mean, seriously! If they were really going to go that far into obvious land, the least - least - they could have done was show Superman's arms or have Aquaman go bare-chested again or something (without the beard, preferably).

That all said, this is kind of overcompensating for that. And the whole thing looks not just a little hap-hazard and hodge-podgy to me too, like someone basically threw it together on a whim and didn't think it through so much. The thigh-high boots, the spikes, the color scheme, the big white stars...? Sigh, I just could wish for better. It's really not horrible or anything, or I wouldn't even go so far as to say it was all so bad all that much, but I will say that the one she had just before Flashpoint was WAY better.

They did so, so much better post-Fashpoint for Carol Ferris, I think - now that was some quality design work.

@scorpio_cassadine: While I won't deny that an outfit more closely modeled after Greek armor would suit her character better, this piece has a central theme that it follows the whole way through. It covers the bits that need to be covered when fighting, and I think it looks pretty cool. Just my two cents.

I understand the constant desire to "cover up" Wonder Woman, but why do they always go in a direction that has nothing to do with her character or origin? Why do they always refuse to play up the whole Greek mythology aspect? Is it not as important as I think it is?

I'm on board with it except for the spiked bracelets. Evokes a bit too much Wolverine for my tastes. Also, if she has weapons, I prefer them to be more traditionally Greek. I've seen her with short swords and spears before paired with a round shield. I think that suits the character's roots.

Um, yeah, okay, so... I'm sure it will come as a surprise to exactly NO one at all that, yes, I am in fact aware that, currently, many more women buy skirts than do men.

Your comment on my comment was sarcastic, beside the point, taken out of context, and kind of condescending too. I wish you would have said something kind or thoughtful instead. But... okay, fair's fair, I'll answer you back with a like-minded (and, in my case, actually potentially very helpful to all human kind) comment: You do know that just because something is popular and accepted, that the fact that it is popular and accepted has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on whether it's right, smart, or at all anything even approaching a good idea, don't you? If not, I would highly recommend reading a few history books - they're overflowing with very obvious (and often sad-making, thoroughly depressing, and/or tear-jerking) examples of that very simple, gratuitous, perpetually tragic, and often starkly horrific truth.

Sorry, you sounded shocked and offended that Wonder Woman was wearing less on the JLA cover, when she's worn a swimsuit based costume for most of her 70+ year history. You also appeared unfamiliar with American social customs, women are voluntarily buying a lot of revealing clothing and it's not because men are forcing them to do it. If your beef is with societal norms, or perceived gender roles, the women's magazine industry is probably a better place to incite change. Fictional heroines in comic books are the least of your problems.

I like the armor and the wrist blades but I would rather the armor be magical and come to her when she needs it or taps her wrist bands together. I really liked her normal style apperance when she was wearing a jean jacket I think it was called the Wonder Woman 600 apperance.

J Scott Campbell summarized my thoughts.

I rarely comment about comic book industry matters on my personal FB page, but I gotta say, shoulder pads, especially big bulky metal ones NEVER look good on women. Everything about them is unfeminine and lacks style. No grace to this approach at all.

And on a side note, I find the continued knee-jerk reaction to internet message board critics demands to keep female heroines covered from head to toe in fabric an overreaction. She’s an Amazon Warrior, she’s NOT in the *Taliban! unsure emoticon
