NYCC 2014: SECRET WARS by Jonathan Hickman in 2015

At a special event at the Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. in Times Square, a big announcement was made. Marvel has been planning on a new SECRET WARS for some time with Jonathan Hickman writing and Esad Ribic providing the art.

The series begins in May 2015 and will come out of the current AVENGERS and NEW AVENGERS Time Runs Out storyline.

Marvel's President of Publishing and Publisher of Print made the announcement and said the following:

"We've been sitting on this for a very long time. When Jonathan brought this to us, we had an opportunity to just not celebrate this in publishing, so we're going to be extending this in a year-long program into 2016 with our merchandising partners, digital partners and other partners."

As with the original SECRET WARS, we can expect some merchandise. It was announced they would be partnering with Hasbro, Gentle Giant, and Hot Topic.

We'll have to wait for more information.

Ohhhh so is this what happens when time runs out?

I'm so pumped for this, I see characters from most of the relevant alternate universes.

There is a lot to take in from that image above, but I am really excited for this.

I'm keeping an open mind about this one. It has a solid creative team, and according to them has been in the works for awhile and therefore may not be as rushed as all the others have been lately. However, I am already not liking the thing about them extending this into a year long program.

Marvel should really let there current event have it's spotlight before announcing the next one. All it does is undermined the current event.

Hickman normally delivers so, I think I will skip Axis to pick this one up even though I'm certain it will lead to a another Marvel "age"

I wonder if this is going to lead to the rumored reboot.

More importantly though Another Event! C'mon Marvel.

I don't care for Hickman's writing style, so I hope most of the Marvel books are going to still be enjoyable without having to keep up with this series. Events are fine in and of themselves, the problem is all the numerous tie ins with regular ongoing series. I'm a Marvel guy, so I would hate for most of their books to be taken over by a Hickman story for a few months to a year.

Man it seems we really need to be reading Avengers and New Avengers to know what's going on in the Marvel Universe. I guess I should get on that...

Events after Events. Yes Axel Alonso that is what people need. Don't be surprise next time Axel Alonso announce every 3 months Marvel will have big events. Oh events is not special to us anymore. We not gonna do events once a year or once every 2 years. We just want consumer money

Sounds cool but the title is really confusing

So I see Darkdevil, Arno, Miles?, American Dream, Captain Mar-Vell? This looks like a bunch of different realities clashing together with Ribic drawing.....well I'm sold

I wonder if this means the Incurious were just the Beyonder trying to set the stage for another of his games?

I'm just happy to get more Hickman books. The closer we get to a time where Hickman isn't writing Reed Richards the sadder I get.

i guess Marvel is doing the same thing that dc did with crisis and they really took out x-men and FF wow. After all the good stories those two teams done for marvel and they give them the boot that kinda sucks

Yearly events is kind of Marvels thing. Then you through in a separate event to keep the X Men occupied as well it gets old.

Crisis on Infinite Earths: Marvel Edition.

But seriously, I'm excited about this. We're going to see all these different marvel realities collide with each other, and it might lead into some kind of universe wide reboot. And maybe, hopefully, some storylines that weren't finished in other universes will be resolved in this story.

And being realeased the same month as age of Ultron no less.

I'm looking forward to this. This looks awesome!

@timelord: But they're not yearly anymore, that's the problem. Heck we just finished an event, we're going into an event, and another event has just been announced. It's getting kinda crazy, and a bit stupid.

@captainmarvel4ever: Yeah at least with DC there cross overs are just tied to a family of books. So when its time I can just drop them then pick it up once the cross over is over.

Uncanny Avengers has been good, and I am one of the ones that actually really enjoys Remender Cap, even though Brubaker's Cap was better.

I know this is just a pipe dream, but Marvel should only have one major event a year, and it should last no more than 3 months. The main reason that events sell so well is because you need to read the main event book to better understand any ongoings you follow that have tie in issues. Maybe having tie in issues being separate from ongoing series would be a happy medium. That way people could skip an event and not miss out on anything directly related to the ongoings they follow.

@timelord: right, with Marvel it seems like every book gets sucked into their events. I wouldn't be as upset if the events were better received.

@roaris87: that sounds interesting but reasonable actually. Maybe he'll become the primary Spider-Man in the Marvel U.
