The name of the state derives from a Seneca term for "large creek". The capital and largest city is Columbus. It is the 17th state of the Union, admitted in 1803. It is the 34th largest state but the 7th most populated. Only California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois and Pennsylvania have larger populations.
Ohio borders Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Lake Erie separates it from the Canadian province of Ontario.
