How did SA Hal fight Sinestro?

So back in the Silver Age GL's were notoriously useless against anything yellow, right? Then how was Hal able to fight Sinestro with his yellow power ring? Unless I'm completely forgetting sonething, Hal's ring wasn't completely useless against Sinestro's ring, so how could he affect that but nothing else yellow?
