Marvel Honors the "Women of Marvel" in Video Games

During March, Marvel honors some of their greatest female heroes in their games.

No Caption Provided

Beginning Thursday, March 3rd, Marvel Games will be releasing new characters and content featuring Marvel’s “Women of Power” across its portfolio of mobile, console, handheld, and PC game titles. The event coincides with Marvel Publishing’s “Women of Power” initiative, which will feature 25 new comic covers for Marvel’s most popular female characters. Additionally, new consumer product lines celebrating these iconic Super Heroes will launch in March and continue throughout spring and summer.

“Marvel’s ‘Women of Power’ event celebrates some of the most popular heroes and villains in the Marvel Universe, bringing them together in a unique way for the first time,” said Peter Phillips, EVP/GM, Interactive and Digital Distribution, Marvel Entertainment. “By featuring these stories and characters throughout a single month, we’ve lined up one the most exciting events in the history of Marvel games.”

Details on some the Super Heroes, Super Villains, and content being released during the “Women of Power” event include:

  • LEGO Marvel’s Avengers (Console and Handheld): LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is releasing a new pack of downloadable content later this month that will add to the roster of over 100 characters. This pack features one of Marvel’s most powerful Super Heroes, Captain Marvel, alongside fan favorite characters Moonstone and the Super Villain Poundcakes.
  • Marvel Contest of Champions (Mobile Game): In the latest update for Marvel Contest of Champions, fans will need to battle through a new event quest featuring Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) and will be able to enhance their team with some of the greatest female Super Heroes, including She-Hulk, X-23, and Ms. Marvel herself.
  • Marvel Avengers Academy (Mobile Game): Players enroll, build, and run Avengers Academy – the ultimate Super Hero school for a very exclusive group of students in Marvel Avengers Academy. This March, several all-new female heroes will be joining the student body of the Academy during a special event.
  • Marvel Puzzle Quest (Mobile Game): Marvel Puzzle Quest, the best in match-3 puzzle gameplay, will be releasing brand new “Women of Power” variant comic covers featuring their top female characters.
  • Marvel Future Fight (Mobile Game): In Marvel Future Fight players will be able to engage in a brand new game event featuring Proxima Midnight, a member of Thanos’ Black Order and one of his most powerful generals. This is in addition to the already wide roster of female Super Heroes, including Black Widow, Thor (Jane Foster), Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), and Spider-Gwen.
  • Spider-Man Unlimited (Mobile Game): Spider-Man Unlimited features content from over 50 years of comic lore, including more than 30 playable Spider-Man characters. Fans will now enjoy more web-slinging, running, and dashing with a special event featuring notable Spider-Women including Silk.
  • Marvel Heroes 2016 (PC Game): Written by the critically acclaimed comic-scribe, Brian Michael Bendis, Marvel Heroes 2016 is an online action RPG from the creative visionaries behind Diablo and Diablo II. In the latest installment to this game, players will be able to team up with fan favorite Rescue and earn an enhanced power costume for American Dream.

Marvel’s “Women of Power” Month will also see the launch of new product lines celebrating Marvel's female Super Heroes. These leading ladies of the Marvel Universe made an impact with fans when new figures, playsets, role play and collectibles were revealed at New York Toy Fair last month. Iconic characters including Black Widow – soon to be seen in the upcoming film, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War – were shown in a variety of sizes and categories, along with classic Marvel Comics characters such as Captain Marvel, Silk, Gamora, Spider-Gwen, Kitty Pryde and more

Funny, the more people try to sell these characters to me, the less I care about them. I mean, Black Widow, Mockingbird and Squirrel Girl are at least original concepts, but the others are all derivative of other characters. Black Widow is interesting, but I wouldn't dream picking up any of her current run when she's often listed alongside these jokes.

I think it's cute how important you consider yourself to be to Marvel's bottom-line. Newsflash: The comic book industry has had a huge shift in demographic in the last decade.

So yeah, stop caring. They don't care about you either. The Disney/Tumblr crowd are easier to market to than basement-dwelling fanboys, and in the long-run, more profitable.

They could have listed Jean Grey from Marvel VS Capcom 3.

This is for ongoing content in their videogames. Also, are far as Marvel is concerned, the MVC series doesn't exist. Any videogame made before Disney's acquisition has been discontinued.

I will never understand the fascination people have been having lately with the simple fact that female super heroes exist. We got A-Force, that new dc super girls or whatever show, and now this. Why is the fact that there are women in superhero comics something we're constantly celebrating right now. It's not exactly a recent phenomenom.

Here comes the people that complain about Marvel forcing diversity on us, by pandering to other demographics besides white males. When will they stop their progressive agenda?!!

@fartsmcgee: "basement-dwelling fanboy" That's a pretty rich assumption for a person who gets so up in arms about someone not liking the same characters as they do to make, don't you think?

Idk why people judge a deviation marvel makes when it first gets reveled then once it's out its better than they thought, I appreciate that marvel takes risks and doesn't play it safe like most companies do.

@bl00dwerk: You'll also notice there is no Wasp, Medusa, or Gamora. I'm not quite sure why they chose these specific characters, but there were plenty of other female characters that were left out who weren't mutants.

@child_of_the_past: The X-Men are way too popular to be left out of everything and that's exactly what Marvel is dong. They're being a bunch of babies over movie rights. Storm or Rogue, at the very least, should be on that image WAY before some of those that are on there. Hell, Rogue's headlining Uncanny Avengers. Why isn't she on there?

How is it FOX's fault? They're just using the rights they paid Marvel for. Just because Marvel is in a good place financially, nowadays, doesn't mean FOX should roll over and give the rights back they paid good money for. Besides, it's the fans who are being made to suffer. Marvel / Disney have become a bunch of childish brats...

The real crime is how they literally run after mainstream media these days, when comics used to be ahead of the crowd, but no lets give us the same modern day acceptable stereotypes movies and television have figured out the last years.

Also lets ignore books like Excalibur that was a majorly female team without making a big deal out of it. Thats true diversity. Not these female superheroes, where they seem to try to tell you the important part is "female" and not superhero. I might actually check out A-force with the shift of creative team simply because the writer said its mainly gonna be a story about superheroes saving the world. Which reminds me, why are women not allowed to write mixed superhero teams?

And really Marvel makes a marketing campaign out of adding female characters that should have been in the game already to their games. Yeah, you rock, Marvel!

@bl00dwerk: I really feel like we need to stop blaming Marvel for what really seems like a Disney/corporate problem. The writers don't seem to have anything against the X-Men. They still have several books and an event coming up. They also seem to have no problem with Deadpool's success. I believe most the issues are coming from Disney who doesn't want one of their sub-companies potentially helping the sales of a competitor. Does I mean there will be less X-Men stuff? Yes. But does it mean they hate the X-Men and wish they would disappear? No. They've had plenty of opportunities to erase he mutants up until now and yet they are still here. That's just my opinion. I'm sure you feel differently. I hope nothing I said seems offensive in any way.

So Marvel Future Fight is only adding 1 female character for international women's month? Wth? They add 3 characters a month minimum and February they added 3 females (if you count Carnage). Talk about an epic failure. Plus Proxima Midnight, a powerful but lame 'henchmen'.

Where are the characters people have been demanding on their forum for months? Spider-Woman, Red She-Hulk, The Enchantress, Rescue, Valkyrie, Medusa, Crystal, Power Princess, Titania, Echo, Naja, Madame Hydra, Morgan Le Fay, Madame Mask, Moonstone, Hela, Blurr, Hellcat, Spider-Girl, White Tiger, Kate Bishop, Miss America, Spectrum, Misty Knight, Mantis, Quasar, Moondragon, or Iso?

What's the point of Proxima Midnight without the rest of the Black Order or Thanos? She's not gonna have many teamup options without them.

I like the Marvels Heroes game mostly because they don't just focus on the movie stuff. I like the game play too, but don't care for the story at all. They have a ton of playable female characters in that game tough and might I had a handful of mutant women. Out of the ones pictured though, I only like She-Hulk.

I only play Marvel Future Fight, but I'm sorta excited for Proxima though. Thanos, Nova and Moon Knight better get added too.

Also, this is kind of disappointing. We've had female superheroes for a very long time, and the fact that they're making a big deal of this in recent times JUST to satisfy the Tumblr/feminist crowd that don't usually even read comics is ridiculous, but whatever.

Chill. Go and drink some ale or something. I gave my opinion, but it's exactly that, an opinion. I don't consider myself infallible. I'm aware they're trying to appeal more to younger audiences, and to girls, but that doesn't bar the rest of us from having opinions.

I should've said 'the more people try to sell these characters' and left out the 'to me'. If it gave the impression that I needed a sarcastic 'newsflash' to see my senses, that was unintentional.

That's more like it. Represented well, too (5 OF THEM!)! I know Jean (the REAL one) is dead, but Storm should be on just about anything with Marvel's ladies on it. I'm not pretending the X-Men are Marvel's #1 priority, or anything, but they don't have to try to make people forget about them just because of the movie rights. I've been hoping things are starting to get better between Marvel and FOX, since FOX actually has two tv shows coming in the near future, but who knows? That image is farily new, maybe the most recent one, which is good. Regardless of who has the rights to what it would be nice if the two could get along well-enough that the fans don't have to suffer...

It makes me so sad. Instead of Storm or Rogue we get Squirrel Girl and Spider-Gwen. Why is that a thing? Spider-Gwen. Why? Go ahead and push your other newish Spider-gal, Silk. Give us Daughters of the the Dragon and Heroes for Hire, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing.
