Folks, when the first time I saw Superman's costume in the New 52, it look cringeworthy.
As time gone by, I start to warm up to it. Less of a bother, and more of a meh.
You know what would make the costume better? If they remove the collar.

Here me out. Whenever I see a collared Superman I think evil Superman
Look at the entire Injustice series. From the games, to comics. You can sensed the corrupt, angry, evil from the image.

Just look at the redesign and tell me this don't look better

    These looked much better

Then again, that's just my opinion tell me what you think?

Remove the collar and the lines and the new suit is perfect, but no we will never do that because that would hurt Lee's ego and we don't want that do we?

Apparently high collars = aristocrat is deepset in peoples minds, according to something I read a while ago. It does look much better without the collar.

    MAN. I DON'T GIVE A F**K ABOUT JIM LEE'S EGO!

    But for real though

It's not my fault that I dislike the costume, and I know I'm not the only one thinking this.

@jeremy1989: No you are not. The lines are Jim Lee's fetish and his design clearly meant to be something that made him comfortable and goes well with his style(although not even he gives the lines any particular love since he covers them up with shadows) rather than being a well put together suit that is creator-friendly.
The collar is something that makes Superman look aristocratic but takes away from the earth's champion the people see in Superman. Plus it doesn't suit Clark's personality who wants to fit among humans and wants to see him as one of them not as someone better or mightier.

The costume has been drawn great many times, it really depends on the artist. I like the collar, and it makes more sense when you put it into the perspective of the suit's origin, as a ceremonial armor.

Okay? The origin fits a lot of purposes, including the facts that it's basically indestructible and that he was able to find it in a museum to his old world. It also has a collar. All I said was that it works. All that other stuff came after Lee's design, which I wasn't a huge fan of at first. I like it much more when it's drawn by certain other people.

And actually, they probably sat in the board room and brain-stormed the suit before Lee began drawing. I would wager money that they asked "why is it indestructible?" and then said "maybe it's Kryptonian? Jim, what can you do with that?"

If they did I'm seriously gonna wonder why i pay so much money to this company.

In regards to the OP the collarless suit is quite an improvement i must say.

Just thinking about the current suit though...

Ugh unnecessary lines (except maybe for those diamonds on his shoulder's), collar, black S on cape, no colour balance ugh. Sometimes some artists sway me a little but i remember what it actually is and i can't stand it.

I have this comforting recurring dream where in the comics the soul of Pa kent appears before Clark and tells him how amazingly proud he is of him and then he touches him and his suit turns into something better....sounds weird but its pretty cool.

I don't see a collar. Remove the lines and emblem patches on the shoulders and wrists. Also still kind of looks like armor. One thing I liked about MoS was the idea that his costume was a suit that goes on under the armor.

That kind of is moot when his cape which isn't armor is indestructible. Though to be honest I don't remember seeing the cape ripped so far but the armor has been broken.

Actually DC just asked Lee to do some designs. From then on Morrison was the only one who wanted to incorporate the suit change into his stories, the story came way after the design.

When he put the suit on the for the first time, the cape actually got longer. It integrated itself into the suit when connected to it, which means that it's the same nano-technology (or whatever) the suit is made of. The cape also "appears/grows" when he wants it to, just like the rest of the suit. So it's less moot than you're implying.

@kal_smahboi: The cape was indestructible before it got attached to the suit as shown in Action Comic when Superman was captured by the government. Nevertheless it doesn't actually change anything. It just goes to show that could have done the nano thing with a suit instead of armor.

Edit: Look at the F4, Guardian from Alpha Flight, or Booster Gold. All ways to do suits without armor. I actually think something like the F4 would have been good Instead of unstable molecules have self replicating repair nano fabric fiber.

Or just stick to the cape idea. Synthetic materials from a society more advanced then ours.

Is an indestructible suit even distinguishable from armor? From what I can see, that's all it is. Supes' suit has been shown to be cloth-like and flexible, as opposed to hard and armor-like. It just also happens to be indestructible. I can understand not liking the design, but I really like the origin.

@bsaa: He doesnt want to, but as an icon, he should look distinguished. I think the idea that it's a ceremonial garment is enough of an excuse for it being too "distinguished".

He doesn't have a choice, he's just honoring Krypton.

Short answer yes. Visually, conceptually, and a few other uallies. It's actually something I have work too ignore.

You asking that is kind of reminds me when Keven Feige tries to pass off Magic and High Science as being indistinguishable and not really mattering. Could have the same basic origin with a suit.

Ah, see, that's where we differ. First off: I agree, to a point, about the magic vs high science thing. I get you're point, and it's a good analogy, but it falls apart to a point. Armor is an outfit that protects you. They're just the same thing, in my mind. It doesn't have to be made of metal, bulky, etc.

P.S. Forgive my overuse of the word "point." I wrote this in a hurry on the way out the door haha.

Personally, I don’t get any evil vibes when I see collared Superman; it looks to me like fitting visual for ceremonial uniform which is now Supes’ costume. Though if they will get rid of it, I won’t shed any tears.

My problem with lines lies in their unoriginality. Alright, alien costume from another galaxy, alright, lines, but then why they looks so similar to, for example, Earth-made costumes of Batman and Flash?.. Kinda strange, maybe they should rearrange them somehow.

Also, must add that I rather like New-52 “cuffs” and MOS bracelet-like ornament on Superman’s sleeves.

Well, isn't the suit a Kryptonian battle suit from the House of El? Which was a Noble family on Krypton. If that's the case, the collar probably was meant to distinguish him as an aristocrat as any El member in the military would probably gain a high rank anyway (assuming that's what those suits were for.) Given the El Family background, I think the suit looks fine. Plus, I have no issues with lines.

Get rid of the collar, the cuffs and the MOS like bracelet and the New 52 costume would look alright. I could even stand the lines if those 3 things were gone. But that other suit in the OP looks damn fine indeed

A little lighter blue and maybe make the belt yellow plus the changes above and that would be a fitting and sensible costume change to Superman in The New 52.

Aquaman's current suit in my opinion is better then the other 2's but I like this design to much that I included. Also feel that Hawkman and Supergirl could use redesigns.

    Mostly Supergirl

I was appalled when I saw the costume. It looked like she wasn't wearing underwear at all. Just a red superman shaped crest patched on her crotch.

@jeremy1989: Why red lines? I'm trying to visualise how well that would look but my imagination is failing me today. And yeah Supergirl's new costume isn't the best for certain. That needs to be changed asap.

@justthatkid Nice redesigns mate. The current Wonder Woman one has grown on me, probably because the series is so good. But the battle skirt included in there is nicely done indeed. A battle skirt for the cinematic Wonder Woman would work really well and the battle skirt outfit that Wonder Woman wore in her second New 52 arc looked really cool too IMO.
