In the world of comics shields have been outfitted on various characters both as protection and also to symbolize them as their standard. From the most famed shield as the one Captain America carries to the lesser known counterparts as the Blue Eagle's shield all have represented them in an iconic symbol as the shield.
The quote on the title of this list comes from an ancient Spartan saying. To the Spartans they believed the shield meant their collective survival in battle. The intro of the quote is the most important part of as it is the true meaning about their shields. To the Spartans losing your shield was seen as an act of failure because your shield not only protected you, but the man next to you. Spartans who lost their shield in battle were expected to recover it, or die trying.
