There's always going to be new takes on any type of character archetype. So imo its kind of useless to always try and use the classical/modern classifications for anything. Modern is w/e people think of as being current while trying to think its somehow really different from what came before it. The best writers simply write what interests them while making it stand out compared to what came before. Most writers are not able to do that.

  • Classic Anti heroes from the 1970s-90s stood out from the mainstream and heavily contrasted with the archtypical boy scout all American Superhero from the silver and golden age of comics with their harsh and many time fatal methods that included torturous integrations,,..Like Wolverine, Lobo, The Punisher, Roarshac,John Constantine, The Question, Spawn, Ghost Rider,Venom and Blade...
  • Now becuase Batman has sort of the blurred the lines, many artist and writers think if they make a character like Batman that automatically makes them an Anti hero..But lets not kid ourselfs even though Batman was always operating on the cusp of being considered an Anti hero, he never did anything to push him over the edge..And as such always remained among your arch typical Superheroes..Id say the biggest problem now since comics have become much more mature..Anti Heroes dont really stand out like they used to in the past. And have sort become kind of redundant and pointless in todays comic book landscape..Their best served as not confirming to government registration..But like others have said things have so become blurded and the comic book world has evolved so much more since them, The term Anti Hero is kinda hard to define nowadays.

Being "dark" and brooding doesn't actually make someone an anti-hero. That is why people don't think anti-heroes have a place or it's hard to define or don't stand out. An Anti-hero is when a protagonist possesses "disagreeable" personality traits, such as being a liar, a cheat, dishonest, aggressive to a fault etc etc. they do things out of self interest rather than "moral correctness" blah blah so true anti-heroes still have a place and are still unique but people mistake them for "brooding" and willing to kill.
