The diabolical Mortimer managed to have Zagor accused of two crimes actually committed by him, those of a soldier and of the wealthy businessman, Mr. Humbert. The Spirit with the Hatchet is imprisoned in Pleasant Point in the custody of the men of Captain Simpson, who has decided to hang him as soon as possible. Mortimer judging that his plan has been successful by now, he canoes away from the trading post.
However, he is followed along the river by Jenny, one of the girls from Plesant Point, secretly in love with Zagor. Where is Mortimer headed? What else does he have in mind? Zagor, managed to escape, sets out on the trail of the ruthless criminal, trying to reach him before he can harm Jenny ... thus he discovers another piece of the diabolical plot hatched against him ...
