I don't get it. He was the most interesting X-Men character at the time of his death with the most story potential, and no good stories have come from him dying.
X-Men
Team » X-Men appears in 13410 issues.
The X-Men are a superhero team of mutants founded by Professor Charles Xavier. They are dedicated to helping fellow mutants and sworn to protect a world that fears and hates them.
Why did Marvel kill Cyclops?
Because Marvel went through a phase where they wanted to kill off all of the most popular X-Men. He will probably be back in a year or two.
If I'm being optimistic, it was so they could hand the leadership of the X-Men to either Storm or Emma Frost, who are the X-Men's strongest female leads.
If I'm being realistic, it's because killing Cyclops at the height of his power (Phoenix Force or after his neat Mutant Revolution) to start off another iconic arc that makes him a great martyr.
If I'm being honest though, it's because they're continuing the tradition of giving Cyclops the roughest leadership role ever, ended it with his anti-climactic death, used it as a precursor for another trite hero vs hero event, and still managed to misconstrue his memory by pinning it on another anti-hero.
As for death, well... despite Xavier being in 'heaven', he's got a more nefarious limbo role in Astonishing X-Men. Original Jean is going to be making a comeback, and practically already has in Jean Grey 6-7. And Wolverine has come back, because despite all the copies who have been trying to replace him, is coming back for some reason. Marvel looks like they're going to bring back all the X-Men they've killed, which is actually fairly consistent on how often they die, yet somehow don't die.
Because they had momentum with a surprisingly popular character who they didnt want to be as popular as he was. Also they lacked the ability and the want, to translate his cult popularity within the niche X-fanbase into mainstream popularity especially considering a core part of his base sees him as the anti-Avenger character whose positive actions make the top good guys look bad despite no fault of their own....

This is definitely the best answer. Cyke was the only one to really call out the Avengers for lack of action, and every time they interacted it made it seem more and more like he was right....even when they wanted to paint him as a bad guy.
That's how we went from a peaceful march on DC....to once again becoming phoenix...to showing backing up after Secret wars...only to die with the world thinking he is the most evil person in the world for destroying a poison cloud
