All good things must come to an end. Today Marvel has announced that in October, we will se the end of an era. Uncanny X-Men will conclude with issue #544.

Starting back in 1963, the series originally just had the title X-Men. It was in 1980, half way through the Days of Future Past storyline where the series changed to Uncanny X-Men with issue #142.

The first run of the series was actually canceled in 1970 due to low sales but rather than completely end, previous issues were reprinted. This lasted until 1975 when Chris Claremont wrote Giant-Size X-Men which introduced the new team (with characters such as Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, etc) and continued in X-Men #94.

WIth the upcoming SCHISM story, there will be a divide in the X-Men and one of the results will be the end of this series. Said to be years in the making, when the dust settles, the state of mutantkind will be irreparably changed forever.

It's unfortunate that the original X-Men series is ending. Uncanny X-Men #544 is on sale this October. It will be written by Kieron Gillen with pencils and cover by Greg Land.

Why on Earth idn't they end it on a landmark issue like #450 which would have been only a few months later?

This is so obvious.  Cancel Uncanny X-Men, launch something else, then rename that Uncanny X-Men and renumber it to #450 later on.

However, I really am saddened by this news.  They should have just handed the series over to a decent creative team instead of cancelling it.  It's going out on an all time low.  Although not surprising, it's disappointing to see Marvel resort to these sorts of tactics.

Thats terrible. Hopefully they just call it a different title, starting at No. 1 maybe, and then when schism blows over they can bring it back for issue 600.
Right? X-men legacy has been called different things over the years...

I agree Fraction shouldnt have his hands in any big titles. I wish he would have stayed out of the X-men.

Wow. Ending such an iconic series with Greg Land doing the cover and interior.

Never mind, they'll just rename X-Men as 'Uncanny X-Men' and add up the total number of issues of those series combined and rename the adjectiveless one as 'Uncanny' in time for #500.

I just don't get it, this is like cancelling Batman and keeping all the other Bat-titles going.

What? This is just a gimmick. We will get two new X-Books, that will be the status quo for a few years, the a big hyped relaunch.

Once again the lack of creative writing and genuine commitment to the history of series/characters/titles rears its head in the new millennium of Marvel.  Time to order those back-issues TPBs, everyone, or the dvd-roms with the 40 years of issues.  This is a sad time indeed.

This is your fault G-Man. Marvel must have read your comment about X-Men being sexist and now all books with X-Men in it must be cancelled and renamed with no references to gender!  =p

Plus now like the cartoon, the relaunched X-Book will be Wolverine and the X-Men and Uncanny First Class. =p

Ten bucks says they will restart it in two years or less. As long as they don't leave stupid cliffhangers like Kitty Pryde still being intangeble, I dont care, there are still good x-books and this will be back sooner or later

Yawn... Knee-jerk reaction to DC's renumbering. Relax guys! Does anyone really think anything like this is going to last? Like anything else the big two have done in the last five years, this will not matter in the long run.

    Also, about Gillen's quote:
"The X-Men has always been a book with ideology and ideas at its heart, and to be fair to them — to best present them — you have to be entirely true," Gillen said. "And if the story we're telling demands that you end the 'Uncanny X-Men,' you end the 'Uncanny X-Men.' No, it's not taken lightly — but it's taken if it's necessary to do it."

Lol. No, it's not a marketing trick. We're doing it because the story demands it! Honest! As if the X-Men wouldn't just boot Cyclops and Wolverine and carry on with a new leader.

Hell, even Dodson would do better. The last issue of a series like this deserves a GREAT artist, and Land is far from that.

I'm so sick of Marvel and DC making retarded business decisions... "OH, I know what we can do! Let's cancel Uncanny X-men, that'll bring in new readers!" and it stings because it reminds me of Immortal Iron Fist... "Huh, people aren't digging this book as much as they were when Brubaker/Fraction/Aja were on it... Maybe this new creative team isn't doing it for the readers? Should we replace them? NAH, screw that, just cancel it."

UGH. So sick of all this. Looks like for the forseeable future, with the exception of Amazing Spider-man.... Make Mine Image.

I don't understand why do this at all.  A lot of comic titles change, but keep the same numbering system (or sometimes keep it covertly, as happened with Thor and probably will with Superman, etc).  But as much as I try, I can't feel bad whenever I hear the words: "cancelled" and "Greg Land" in the same sentence.

I sympathise with Uncanny fans, I'm still not best pleased about Thor being split but luckly Journey into Mystery has been great. It should return soon enough as many other have said but it is indeed sad to see a title such as this no longer on shelves.

    LOL!

I guess the book saw it coming, I am just wondering what Marvel will do to bring it back in the future. It's strange to see the First Class on the cover. With the present First to Last story arc in the adjective-less X-Men title it seems that the First Class is becoming more prominent in the X-Universe. How and why is my question.

As others have said before, this is just a ploy to get people reinterested in the X-Men after declining sales. Remember when Captain America died, then all of a sudden people were interested in the character again? Same thing here, Marvel is just playing off the "you don't know what you truly have until its lost" concept and it will most assuredly come back retitling the newest incarnation of what is after Uncanny X-Men.

I am feeling some serious mid to late '90s feeling here with the X-Men slump.
