Original Member of the X-Men Revealed to be Gay
Is that even possible? How does sexual orientation change by time jumping. It would make sense to me if Older Bobby was gay...
Actually asking. Anyone knows this?
@psycho_soldier: This panel it's from Batgril not Batwoman that was a character specially crated fot that book the reason why people don't like this it's beacuse it's Bobby Drake one of the X-Men founding members, whom Bendis just "changed" his secuality for the sake of change (AKA Retcon) .
yeah I know is not from Batwoman, it's from Bluntgirl
I was showing a worst way to come out
and how everyone and their mothers made a deal about this but the entire run of Batwoman and the fact that they didn't allow the writer to matty Kate & Maggie got lost
They need to create new characters and stop recycling smh
This is stupid. Another moronic "we're being all-inclusive" stunt. You can create gay characters instead of suddenly turning characters who are obviously heterosexual gay, like it's some sort of fad. Bendis can learn a thing or two from how Wildstorm handled Apollo and Midnighter. They were gay, but it wasn't treated like some sort of sole definition.
And yes, Jean should know better than to go prying through people's minds.
WTF not my boy Iceman this can't be.
Someone might be changing his username......
The kids are clearly not from 616 so it doesn't really matter. Unless they go with the Hank "I broke space and time" explanation and just throw all logical rules out the window.
Was she reading his mind without his consent? Because if so that's a naughty naughty Jean!
That's more upsetting to me than Bobby being gay. Total violation of privacy. It's like Jean reading his diary.
Dear Diary.
It's me, Bobby, I was about to take a shower and walked in on Scott changing..I liked what I saw.
Jean: OHMAHGAWD, BOBBY, YOU'RE GAY!!!
that nosy b...
It was cringeworthy
"Bobby I've read your mind you're gay"
"I could be Bi"
"Nope you're gay"
Jesus Jean respect his privacy.
Yeah, seriously. I kinda lost a lot of respect for her as a character after seeing this. Not only was it a total invasion of privacy, but she also called him out on it and then forced him to come out. Not cool, Jean. Not cool.
Exactly. I never really cared for Jean. But after learning this, I care less for her.
Thumbs up at being annoyed at Jean for her constant violation of peoples minds.
$100 says this is just Bendis retaliating for Aaron's WATXM where Iceman was dating his precious phasing waifu.
This isn't a retcon. It is incredibly common for a person in his 30s to be gay and living a heterosexual lifestyle, dating women and denying their actual wants. I have known people like this in my life. It isn't a crazy thought for Bobby to be a gay man who just isn't admitting it to himself, nor is it crazy for him to have been with women in the past. Perhaps Young Bobby's experience living in 2015 America has made it easier for him to accept this about himself at this young age. It isn't erasing any of Old Bobby's past or Young Bobby's future to make it known that he was/is living as a closeted gay man.
Bobby had a story just two or three years ago where his subconscious created duplicate Icemen to protect everyone he had ever loved, and all of them were women. That was his subconscious at work, and you cannot just magically turn your subconscious straight no matter how deep in denial you are. He also had an arc when he was involved with Polaris about feeling inadequate as a result of competing for her affections with Havok. It is a retcon, and the bit about him being in perpetual denial is completely unnecessary, especially when Bobby has known Northstar, Anole, Rictor and Shatterstar for years. It might be incredibly common in certain places, but think of what place Iceman comes from. Is he afraid the X-Men of all people are going to have a problem with him being gay?
Frozen really needs to stop being swept under the carpet, it's without a doubt the best piece of character work Bobby's ever received and was the stand out arc on Liu's run.
But yeah, this is my inherent problem with it. Iceman being 'fully gay' as Jeen tactfully put it kinda shits on his established history and on far better stories than 'My name is Jeen and I respect no ones privacy whatsoever.' Now him being Bi? That I could totally buy and that's something I'd love to see a writer run with.
This is just getting worse and worse.
So, Bobby mentions how hot Illyana is and Jean pulls him outside for some one on one? Because, he needs to know he's gay? Because she's read his mind and is doing him the favour? Or, you know, telling him to "quit it" since, she knows?
I can't.
Bendis, what the hell are you doing? This makes no sense, and you've portrayed what is one of the most intimate discoveries a person can have about themselves into...what? A golly gee, I guess all that macho bravado was really Bobby hiding his true nature, which is gay? As in, "fully" gay? Like there's some kind of thermometer?
Furious. Yes, I do believe I am furious.
As for bringing real world instances of a much older person becoming aware of their homosexuality, yes, I am sure that happens, but with Bobby? With his past history? Even with people bringing up the possibility of him being gay in the past, what does that mean, exactly? That the stories involving him and female characters have all this time been acted out delusions on his part?
You have this one character invading another character's privacy, throws ideas around like everyone being bisexual in some way, yet is insistent the character in question is "fully" gay? Does that not contradict what was just stated?
Does he read what he writes? Does Marvel not believe in editing, any more?
Have him discover through a relationship with another male that he is possibly gay, or bi, like most young people do when they are exploring their sexual selves. Is that possible? You know, an actual, freaking storyline?
I'm just going to make my very own head cannon and believe Jean put the idea in his head that Bobby is gay, "fully" gay and go forward from there. Here's to hoping the next writer who handles the Iceman character actually gives him a story that develops the character into a sexually fluid individual or just leaves this in the past (which I'd much prefer).
Plus, the idea that the adult Bobby "chose" to ignore his homosexuality and live a hetero lifestyle because being a mutant was enough to deal with is even more abhorrent.
I need to read some Valiant and get this garbage out of my head.
I really hate that this got spoiled before the comic was released.
@sesquipedalophobe: lol, that's right @2cool4fun: They have so many characters... I don't think it could work...
OMFG!!!!!Not my all time favorite character that I idolized thanks to Spiderman and His Amazing friends and got me into comics when I was a kid!!!! NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
I always hoped someone would write great stories for him since he's often been treated like he's invisible, BUT NOT THIS!!!!!!!!! MARVEL, you're just killing me!!!!
@ms-lola: Very good post. You win the thread.
@ec2277: I hear you.
@ms-lola: I think Bendis wants to recreate the O5 with his own ones. And maybe replace the older ones. A new start. He had done this in all ANXM.
Oh, I know. I have issues with that as well.
He's also smeared himself on other characters like X-23. It's why I've stopped reading ANXM. And Uncanny. I've been getting my X-Men fix in other books for a while now.
Is that even possible? How does sexual orientation change by time jumping. It would make sense to me if Older Bobby was gay...
Actually asking. Anyone knows this?
Maybe it's a yet unknown sideeffect of timetravel? :)
Time Travel - May turn you gay.
@outside_85: I don't think lol, he's just another Bobby
@farkam: This is killing me, man. I'm holding back, a lot.
its just doesnt seem earned, like we are doing it just to do it. and also Jean is just turning into a horrible character. She just uses people to get what she wants, acts like the victim when she is stirring stuff up, and invades the minds and privacy of everyone around her and doesnt give two craps. I dont mind that they make Iceman gay cuz 1) he is honestly one of my least liked X-men characters 2) I am not reading this book so I honestly have no investment into his character. The problem I have is that it is turning homosexuality into a sensational plot device instead of a natural character identity trait. He's gay so what, they only reason Bendis is making a big deal out of this because he insists that it must be a big deal. Instead of giving the character and homosexuality the respect and dignity it deserves, its just a throwaway gimmick to try and sell comics.
by far one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.
Not just from a pointless to the story standpoint, but also from what it implies.
It implies that people CHOOSE to be homosexual. When in fact that is not true. Hey I have a question for all heterosexuals : "When did we decide that we were going to be straight?" Exactly. I didn't remember choosing I like women. I just do. Just like homosexual's "just like the same sex".
Screw religion or beliefs or values, Factually speaking: you don't choose who you are attracted too. For bobby's older self to be straight but his younger self to be gay makes absolutely no sense. Who in the hell green lit this garbage? It is pointless and contradictory to the character.
That is so cynically laughable, even for marvel and even for Bendis that is just worth a laugh and nothing more.
