The X-Men are a superhero team of mutants founded by Professor Charles Xavier. They are dedicated to helping fellow mutants and sworn to protect a world that fears and hates them.
With the exception of Deadpool, none of the X-Men movies that came after the original trilogy has been as big as the original one from 2000 in the states.
They make up for it internationally. During the time of the first trilogy they were mostly only shown in English speaking countries. Now they're shown everywhere.
Apocalypse was also leaked online, like a week before it premiered in the states. That, combined with competition from Disney during it's theatrical run, really held it back. That said, I doubt it would of been more successful than DoFP, even without those problems.
A lot of modern movies are focused on overseas audiences and lowest common denominator sales. This isn't really unique to X-Men. Personally, I'd rather see something with 1/20th the budget but focused on hardcore comic book nerds. But MuhIP muhLicensing, etc. gets in the way of that. You get the biggest wallets using them as a vehicle for cliche action movies because the name recognition sells.
Need to see the international ticket sales - "X-Men Apocalypse" ended up bringing in $534.5 million worldwide so leaving out huge markets like China is a big problem with these projections. I would also want to see sales from DVD, digital downloads, and digital rentals.
