both ladies have been Cyclops woman and both ladies have been poorly treated by marvel, just so he can shine in comics. so is it Cyclops fault and would both ladies blossom without him. share your views please.

That's a bit disingenuous. Cyclops isn't to blame for their respective predicaments.

What happened to Jean was entirely Jean's thing.

As for Emma, she probably never would have gotten a chance to shine without her relationship with Cyclops.

Agreed, both received some of their best characterization being with Cyclops. Some Marvel writers are to blame for making them his side kick, and being unable to write them as powerful single women, but I do not think his character is to blame for their mistreatment.

That the writers used both characters to push forward Cyclops' own character development, then sure -- of course. Just as Scott did for Emma's character. And also Jean's.

I get what you are saying though -- I'm not too impressed with how Emma's been portrayed lately and yes, one could argue its to push Cyclops as some renegade bad@ss. (sigh, I don't think I will ever stop laughing at that)

Again -- writers. Make Emma have an affair while under the influence of the Phoenix. Hmmm --- Jean sure missed out on getting some Canadian venison considering how everyone is so forgiving of Emma but I digress. Different times, different times.

And then there is this. Bendis.

He's going to f*ck up every little thing that made Emma, Emma and well --- Marvel Girl, Marvel Girl. Jean is/was not just a Phoenix host and now that she's in the present, its just another female character Bendis is going to play Barbie with before he tires of her and does something that will need to be retconned in the near future (<---that's a plea by the way.).

Just get Land on the line, drop Bachalo and make this upcoming travesty come full circle. I personally feel this question is premature. Emma's and Jean's characters have and will be compromised solely for the sake of Cyclops' man-about-town-get-er-done bravado-type new characterization. I get people think this is an evolution of sorts for the former X-Men leader, but I disagree. This is entirely different Scott Summers--

Oh! How peculiar! Isn't Superior Spiderman not quite Peter Parker either? Oh --- and isn't Xavier potentially the new No-Girl except maybe we should call him No-Brainer since his death meant...well, nothing really, poor chap. Must be some new mandate in the editorial boardroom - switch personalities like musical chairs with the winner getting to be Wolverine, that noble, beacon of light. Right?

Meh, at least I can laugh about it.

I don't think you can blame Cyclops. I don't think you can blame any of the male characters whose love interests get dumped on to promote their storylines (see Women in Refrigerators), and for Cyclops specifically I don't think that's necessarily what happened. The Dark Phoenix Saga was more about Jean Grey the X-Man than Jean Gray the girlfriend of this guy.

Oh you, Time. What if hooking up with all the psychic females is all part of his plan to make the humans and mutantkind alike follow his rule all along? Like his powers are manipulating psychichis to bind to his will without them knowing and his physical beams are just a side effect. Anywho fun thread+3+

Cyclops ain't exactly concerned about being boyfriend material. He's trying to be a good leader. Sure he can be an a$$hat, but I have to admire him for his strength and perseverance as a leader and he gets the job done, and this is coming from me, a Jean Grey nut. I know Marvel loves him, so that's probably a reason why he gets time to shine.

Jean can't exactly shine because she's legally dead and in the White Hot Room. I'm glad to see her back in the pages of ANXM and she's already had some great moments.

Emma hasn't been the same since Whedon. I miss her because she was so snarky and now it's just "darling" every two seconds as if that somehow makes her witty.

    BENDIS MAKE EMMA AWESOME!

Basically, it's the writers or whatever the plot calls for. Cyclops is the leader it's logical that he gets more time to shine. I also blame the girlfriend syndrome, how writers stop recognizing women as characters and relegating them to girlfriend status..

Jean was a two timing hoe, literally that whole affair with Wolverine, and the endless triangle. Eh!

Then you have Emma who also cheated on Scott with Namor, betrayed him with Cassandra Nova, and he still took her back.

Scott needs a lil bit of Storm in his life, she's loyal.

I guess. For as much as Cyke pines for girls he never seems to be without one...just saying. and what is with the blond rebound girl from a redhead thing? Jean to Lee, Jean to Emma? I've never been with a girl, then broken up and then immediately needed a blond to soothe my wounds. its kind of annoying.

@chasereis: Its actually Jeans fault, when she died Scott broke down and quit the X-men, Beast started leading them and did a horrifically bad apocylpse inducing job of it, Phoenix of the White Crown Jean didn't much like that so went back in time and made Scott choose Emma instead of moping around for the rest of his life which was his original plan.

I highly doubt it, dead phoenix means no more life in the Marvelu after all. Not to mention from an out of universe perspective the Phoenix Force is simply to easily used a plot point for marvel to do away with it entirely.

I'm not sure if their creative teams cares about consistency, any more. I doubt they really thought about what the PF means on a larger scale. But yes, I am sure Marvel would bring the PF back just to sell some more comics.

@imperial90: Nice post Imperial. I do remember that storyline (here comes tomorrow was the name right?) however in all honesty I cannot seem to be able to accept every alternate timeline event they throw at us. If marvel NEVER did another days of future past type story, I would NOT miss it at all. While I really do like the original 141-142 uncanny issues, it has been a vehicle for writers far too much, far too often.

@PhoenixoftheTides: I agree the phoenix is not a sentient character anymore but just another captain universe tool. Some characters and events need to have a finite lifespan and editors need to grow a freakin sack and tell the writers "YOU CANNOT USE THAT AGAIN!". That would be epic...
