    Primed for Greatness

Brian Wood's X-Men run finishes its first arc with the promises of things to come. This issue is very, very fast paced (as the previous two have been) and has our favorite female mutants chasing Arkea Prime halfway around the world to stop her from creating a techno-army and resuming her war for Earth against her brother Sublime. It's a fairly simple plot, which is meant to be nothing more than a launch point for this series. It does it's job, and quite well. More than anything in this issue, Wood seems to more clearly define the roles of each team member and possible future intra-team conflicts. My two favorite characters in this book so far are Psylocke and Rogue. I've never been a huge fan of either, but I like Psylocke's quiet dangerousness. She doesn't pull punches and is ready to go straight to the quickest finish (i.e. killing) if she must to save lives. Rogue is the powerhouse you'd expect her to be, but she's also got a bit of a smart mouth and sarcasm to her, which I find humorous. Rachel Grey wasn't featured much in this one, although I greatly look forward to her future exploits. I did like the hinting of conflict between Rachel and Storm. Storm has been clearly defined as the teams leader, and I wonder if there's going to be struggles similar to the old Cyclops-Wolverine leadership struggles.

Olivier Coipel's art is great, as it has been in the previous issues. This may sound strange, but in the realm of comic books where the women always wear costumes showing off their..."assets"...I rather like that Coipel draws these ladies a bit more realistically. If you had large cleavage constantly on the verge of falling out, it wouldn't be the most conducive clothing to wear into combat, get me? To me it also shows respect to these women as characters, that they can and should be liked for their stories and exploits more than just their titillation factor.

The bad news is this arc is way too fast. Three issues made it feel rushed. It could have, and should have in my opinion, been stretched to about five. I understand that Wood, and likely Marvel in general, wanted to wrap up a fast arc and test the waters of the title's popularity and sales. They delivered with an exciting concept, but Arkea seems to be too monster a threat to be wrapped up so quickly and neatly. How she is defeated seemed cliché and uninspired.

Despite that, this issue is still solid and entertaining. Wood is writing this team very well, and has a deep understanding of each characters personalities and powers. Everyone contributes something, and there is no real redundancy. X-Men is definitely worth the money, especially if you're a fan of the franchise.

In the short time this series has been out it has done nothing but amaze me, as although I thought it'd be good, it's been outstanding. It is also becoming one of my favourite series, and although I wasn't planing on getting it after Battle of the Atom if it stays this way I'll definitely be keeping it.PlotAs Storm, Rachel Grey, Psylocke, Sublime, Jubilee, and Shogo head for Budapest in search for Arkea, Kitty Pryde, and the students of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning have their own pro...
