Five years before the present, a promising student had interviewed with Emma Frost, but declined to enroll in her Massachusetts Academy. He had also successfully resisted her telepathic powers. Before he departed the campus, he bid farewell to Marie Ange Colbert (Tarot), an Academy student with whom he had shared a romantic relationship.

The Present: James Proudstar walks the San Francisco streets on a foggy night, when he feels the presence of another. He turns to confront the shade only to find it is his fellow former Hellion, Tarot, whom he’d thought dead. She delivers a dire warning of events that will befall X-Force: the awakening of a “sleeping giant” and betrayal from within. She then fades into the fog, leaving behind the Death card from a tartot deck.

In a bar elsewhere in town, Domino meets with Jesse Aaronson to convey information she has learned about his parents that may aid in his quest to find his long-lost brother, Christopher. His parents had been government security analysts, and Domino knows the whereabouts of Dabney Saunders, who had supervised them.

After Jesse takes a dose of his anti-anxiety medication, they travel to a retirement home in Sacramento. To their disappointment, Saunders is of no help, able to speak only a string of random words and phrases. However, Domino discovers his orderly making a call to someone, reporting the visit. She confronts him, demanding to know who’s on the other end.

At X-Force’s headquarters, Sam Guthrie (Cannonball) and Bobby DaCosta (Sunspot) engage in some demolition work, preparing to make the warehouse better suited to the team’s activities. Tabitha Smith (Meltdown) enters to inform Sam he has a phone call from his sister Paige. Paige is with their ailing mother in Kentucky, whom she lets Sam know is recovering well.

Later, Tabitha, in a dour mood, heads out for the evening, turning down Bobby’s offer of a date. Still, he follows her to a North Beach restaraunt where she meets her estranged father. After her father introduces his new wife (his fourth) and talks about being helped by an organization called the Triune Understanding, Tabitha loses her temper. Fed up with her father’s failed marriages and his devotion to a group she considers a cult, she storms out. Adding to her anger is her discovery that Bobby trailed her there.

Outside the city, sorceress Jennifer Kale observes Dani Moonstar using her newly acquired abilities. She tells Dani her new powers are not supernatural, but instead may be cosmic in nature.

Acting upon what the orderly admitted to her, Domino leads Jesse to a large vineyard house in Santa Lucia. After entering, they are confronted by former New Mutant Magma and Paradigm, a techno-organic being. Jesse uses his power to disrupt the entity, but then he and Domino succumb to a mind-numbing attack, and they collapse, spouting random words. The telepathic assailant enters, introducing himself as Jesse’s older brother, Christopher.

Christopher explains that after the accident that killed their parents, he was taken for study by Saunders, who had destroyed all records of his childhood. Christopher had escaped by using his disruptive telepathy, permanently damaging Saunders’ mind.

Finally, he bring forth his team: Magma, Paradigm, Tarot and another telepath named Switch, collectively known as the New Hellions.
