My quick thoughts on Wonder Woman (contains spoilers)

Just want to share some quick thoughts on Wonder Woman. Saw it last night. definitely go check it out!

    Pros

    • Incredibly well directed. The film knew what it wanted to tell and stuck with it the whole time. Unlike the past couple DC films which were all over the place, this was a focused and well told origin story. Pacing of the film is also excellent
    • Cinematography was mostly excellent. The trench storming and village battle scene is one of my favorite combat scenes in CBM history. Absolutely fantastic.
    • Gal did a surprisingly good job. I have some criticisms of her which I'll talk about later, but she surprised me. I think the biggest thing that helped here was an absolutely wonderful supporting cast. Probably the best in any CBM I've seen. Pine as Trevor in particular helped carry her a lot in my opinion. Their chemistry was great.
    • Tone was excellent. You can definitely feel some of the Marvel quippyness bleeding into the DC film, but they still maintained that level of seriousness DC films have which I personally enjoy and feel make them notably different Marvel films.
    • I really enjoyed the backstory they gave while showing us the Greek mythology / history. It was really nicely done.
    • The fish out of water viewed through a superhero's eyes was really awesome and unique perspective.

    Cons

    • As mentioned, I think Gal's acting ability was hidden a bit in this movie. She only really has one or two "bring it" moments. She was passable but I really felt she was being hidden much of the film. It worked well however as mentioned earlier, Chris Pine carried a lot of this film and the supporting cast was fantastic but still. I personally don't think you need a particular strong actor to play superheroes and I find many incredible actors and actresses being pretty mediocre in many films (looking at Natalie Portman for example) but I want to mention this anyway.
    • Ludendorff and Poison were pretty bad. I know this film takes liberties with history but using such a prominent figure like that rubbed me the wrong way when his personality as I know him historically was much different.
    • The CGI Lasso felt out of place given the setting of the film. Minor gripe but it was pretty distracting when it was shown.
    • Lastly the real negative of this film IMO is the 3rd act. I'm not normally a guy to complain about CGI, and in fact I think most people who say nonsense like "too much CGI" frankly have no idea what they're talking about and are mostly just being sheep echoing what others say but the heavy amount of CGI at the end felt REALLY out of place. The entire background of the final fight with the constant destruction reminded me way too much (negatively) of the final battle in DOJ. And while I realize when we deal with beings of this power a certain amount of CGI is a given, I just don't think it was well done. The CGI in MoS for example between fights of Kryptonians was significantly better and to this day still the measuring stick for which I judge most powerhouse battles in CBM.

Overall I'm glad to see DC back to a character movie. I don't hate DOJ or SS but they really are not as good as MOS or WW. Movies which focus on one character and tell the story that character goes through are just so much more enjoyable to me than these mass ensemble films nowadays.

I'd say this film is a very solid 8/10. I like it much more than GotG2 this year, but Logan is still the king for 2017.

Ever since I got into comics, I didn’t understand why there wasn’t a Wonder Woman movie. When I started reading her books and got into the character, I was still confused why there wasn’t a Wonder Woman movie but now knew I definitely wanted one. After years of waiting, it’s finally here and I’m extremely happy with the result.“Wonder Woman” takes place during World War I and involves pilot Steve Trevor crash-landing on Themyscira. Diana hears about the ...

The camera pans over the blue waters and sky, settling on the white shores and green forests of an island. You are forgiven if you were confused for a moment about what movie franchise you were viewing, but the best way to describe Wonder Woman is probably by calling it what it is not - like the rest of the DCEU, or the MCU for that matter. One of the movie's greatest strengths is the delicate balance it achieves that neither franchise truly accomplishes, weaving together the lightheartedness of ...
