In Greek mythology the Gargareans were an all-male tribe. They had sex with the Amazons annually in order to keep both tribes reproductive. Varying accounts suggest that they may have been kidnapped, raped, and murdered for this purpose, or that they may have had relations willingly. The Amazons kept the female children, raising them as warriors, and gave the males to the Gargareans.

In Gail Simone's Wonder Woman they were created by Zeus as a replacement for the Amazons. They were given an island called Thalarian off the coast of Themyscira with crystal cities and a river of gold. Their champion Achilles was designed to take Wonder Woman's place as Warkiller. Wonder Woman whipped his ass a few times and then he and his boyfriend moved into the Playboy mansion. Nothing ever came of the island of men 300 mile from Themyscira.

During the Perez run there was said to be several lost tribes of Amazons, but the only one Wonder Woman found were the women of Bana-Mighdall.
