    Wonder Woman

    Character » Wonder Woman appears in 8805 issues.

    The Amazon princess, blessed with god-like super abilities, Wonder Woman is one of Earth's most powerful defenders of peace, justice, and equality and a member of the Justice League. She is considered an archetype for many heroines outside of comic book. Her initial origin depicted her as a clay baby brought to life by patron goddess Aphrodite, but in recent years she has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and Amazon queen Hippolyta.

    I know a lot of you would love to see a proper film adaptation of one of DC's most iconic female characters and while it seems that the idea of a Wonder Woman film might be a long way away, there have been plenty of rumors about another television adaptation. The show, which we reported would be developed by David E. Kelley -the same guy responsible for shows like Ally McBeal and The Practice - will likely be televised within the next year. The big question is, who will play Diana/ Wonder Woman? If you are a Wonder Woman fan, then you probably have heard the rumors; everyone from Beyonce and Jennifer Love Hewitt to Eliza Dushku all have either voiced their interest in playing the character or have been rumored to be interested. Well, throw another name into the hat of possible actresses, because South African actress Tanit Phoenix could be one more.

    Over at WhatsPlaying there has been some talk that the South African actress who recently completed some work on the not so successful Warner Brothers film Lost Boys: The Thirst (which, if you haven't heard of, might be because it went straight to DVD) could play the next Wonder Woman- or at least get a screen test. While she definitely has the looks to play the part, does she really have the acting chops? While we don't see much of her acting skills in the official trailer, we do see why it went straight to DVD. Check that out below. Do you think Tanit Phoenix looks the part? Who do you want to see play Wonder Woman?

    I just heard about this Lost Boys sequel........they shoulda left Cory out of the loop. I don't really have any strong emotions one way or the other about Tanit, although I will say she looks like the best option out of the other outrageous candidates.

    She certainly fits the physical requirements, but it will remain to be seen if she has the acting ability to pull off the Amazonian Princess.

    Hmm. Not convinced, personally. I think the acting definitely comes before the body. Jaime Murray (Hustle, Dexter) I think would be a good candidate, she's been seen rocking Wondie's costume before in an episode of Hustle! Or Eliza Dushku who is superb and definitely physically ready, but seeing as it's no longer Joss Whedon it seems unlikely.

    i really think it depends on the type of "spin" Kelley puts on the show to be honest...give me a hint to the series plot line then maybe an actress will come to mind for me. Phoenix isn't a bad option...but not good either.

    She's lovely. So, an actress of Greek decent is asking too much? One thing few people don't realize that always surprised me. When they were casting for the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and were searching for the actor to play the Bulgarian, Viktor Krum. They were actually looking for someone who had Bulgarian background. How were people suppose to of known a Bulgarian from any other Eastern European nation? He only had a few lines.Though I think don't having a real Persian actor could of saved the Prince of Persia movie.  First three minutes of that movie I was asking myself, "What is Oliver Twist doing running through the rooftops of Persia?".

    All that aside, what's important is her acting ability.  I'm worried that if the TV show doesn't go over well. A movie will become unlikely. They almost always have a problem with live action super hero movies. Superman has had a few, but they get boring fast. I enjoyed Smallville for the first few seasons, then things really started to go over the top silly.

    I can see   Eliza Dushku as Wonder Woman.  She usually seems to play the strong female role believably.  I am unfamiliar with Phoenix though so I don't know if she would be a good wonder woman.

    A month and a half ago I responded to a post commenting on Lynda Carter's preference for an unknown, here are the relevant parts:
     ----
    @Gylan Thomas said:

    " I'd much rather not see a swim suit model type play the part. I'd not be able to take it seriously at all. "

    Maybe not a SI styled swimsuit model (or an even less reputable publication), but I would be happy with the casting of a model if of a certain type.  I've know a few models and while I don't claim to make generalizations about them as a whole, the ones I have met fall into two general categories... [ed: type 1] . . . and the ones who "have it all" (they have the confidence and security of a person who knows they're beautiful because they've been told all their life that they're beautiful, they have higher learning degrees, they're well spoken / intelligent calm / professional, they're often successful at business and family life).

    This is a rough example but contrast Lindsay Lohan to Padma Lakshmi.

    To me, the latter category is the kind of personality I'd like to see in a modern take on Wonder Woman.  To bring it back to the article which was less about casting and more about portrayal, Lynda Carter says she played it smart, capable, and friendly... essentially the accessible girl next door or the co-worker in the office (not a dumbed down lust object, but neither was she an Amazonian queen).  I think a nice update, now that popculture is more scifi savvy, would be to enhance the exotic, alien, and authoritative nature of Wonder Woman.

    While Carter's Diana Prince was the cute but mousy co-worker, a modern Diana Prince would be more along the lines of an untouchable boss, CEO, or- for the wanton amongst us- teacher/professor.  The "together" models I've met have that sort of alien personality because they're intelligent people and totally confident (consider that 90% of what constitutes the average person's personality is the aggregation of where their insecurities, hurts, and rejections have molded them into... then imagine a person who's rarely rejected and nearly always adored)... though a few have that tinge of isolation/loneliness (either guys are too intimidated to approach them or the ones that do always are of a certain type or class) which also works well with the Wonder Woman / Diana Prince mythos, in my opinion.

    Again, apologies to any models out there not matching my personal impressions.

    Addressing looks, I think the goal is to cast for Diana Prince because that's where the acting, the face, the nuance, the relationships, the characterization, etc. all comes out... the costume, special effects, and action sequences go a long way towards making any woman Wonder Woman...
    [ed: Consider how fans "cast" any actress who gets caught on camera wearing a WW costume for Halloween].  . . .  So you cast for the best Diana Prince ever and Wonder Woman will follow.  The question is whether, today, we want a mousy type that follows Steve Trevor around everywhere or perhaps someone more assertive? [ed: More stuff, but basically talking about physical characteristics]
    ----

    So in essence I want a confident, smart, beautiful model with alien / exotic qualities and who can act strong and assertive.

    From a relatively cursory YouTube search, Ms. Tanit Phoenix (even her name is exotic and hearkens to mythology!) seems to match all my criteria.  She does appear to have the acting range or is at least teachable, and a little inexperience isn't a bad thing... it doesn't hurt for your lead star's whole world to be your TV show (if they're too good - when the movie offers, etc. start pouring in there's massive temptation to dump the show or compromise).

    For more insight into the actress (which tends to reinforce my criteria):

    Additionally there are some audition / acting clips showing at least Smallville-level acting ability which will only get better with time.  At 5'9" she's as tall as Lynda Carter and at 30 she's young still but an adult... balancing youth and authority.

    As a rule, I'm not a casting-bandwagon kind of person, but compared to all the celebrity / known casting suggested, this is the first suggested candidate that I consider promising.  Not about to start spamming her name and photomanips in every WW casting thread henceforth, though. ;-)

    Pretty much what I was thinking. Nobody really stands up to it beforehand but there isn't any reason why we can't give it to someone who might look the part enough to see if it works.

    She does look spot on in that picture, it's almost uncanny. This is probably the first potential candidate that looks right to me, as none of the usual and less-usual suspects do.

    Let's hope the acting matches the looks.

    Having an over exposed actress will be horrible for Wonder woman, thus, I think Phoenix could fit in just fine. I can't imagine seeing anyone like Megan Fox (although tempting)  or Eliza Dushku etc. playing such an influential role. We need someone fresh that will give character to Wonder woman. I don't care if they say that these actresses have much more experience or are versatile enough to make it work, the fact of the matter is: WHEN I SEE WONDER WOMAN I WANNA SEE "DIANA PRINCE" THE KICK ASS BOMBSHELL, NOT FAITH FROM BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, OR MIKAELA FROM TRANSFORMERS, I wanna see someone new.

    Well, thats just my opinion. :) Peace out!

    I can see it, but does she sound like she could be Wonder Woman?

    This is possibly the best casting possibility I've heard yet. I just googled her a bit, and she even seems to have a personality that is similar to Di.

    @MrGutts:  Lynda wasn't even 5'9 when she played Diana. We are talking about Hollywood ... tricks of the trade and all that jazz can add a couple of inches to her if needed. Plus, she's much taller than most of the other ladies that have been suggested over the years.

     @FoxxFireArt:   Well, according to IMDB she does have Mediterranean blood in her. To what extent and what that exactly constitutes to is up in the air. It's a much accepted theory in the anthro community that the Greeks of today are nothing like the Ancient Greeks due to the mass interbreeding of different ethnicities over the last several thousands of years. Same thing for modern day Italians and ancient Romans, modern Egyptians and ancient Egyptians, etc. I think she definitely has the look, and I'm curious to see her acting ability.

    @sisay: Agreed!

    She seems good, just as long as she can play a strong independent woman with no strong male figure in her life it's all good. basically as long as shes like linda carter
