    Wonder Woman

Character » Wonder Woman appears in 8804 issues.

The Amazon princess, blessed with god-like super abilities, Wonder Woman is one of Earth's most powerful defenders of peace, justice, and equality and a member of the Justice League. She is considered an archetype for many heroines outside of comic book. Her initial origin depicted her as a clay baby brought to life by patron goddess Aphrodite, but in recent years she has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and Amazon queen Hippolyta.

I don't think she's lassoing anybody with that shoe lace on her belt.
I don't think she's lassoing anybody with that shoe lace on her belt.

The WONDER WOMAN movie might be in development-Tartarus right now,  as it were - - X-MEN producer Lauren Schuler-Donner’s vocal petition for the rights was the last I heard about it - - but the Coventry-Telegraph’s saying, offhandedly, that it’s due for 2013. So, as you’d expect, when they got the chance to talk to Lynda Carter, they asked for her thoughts on the potential feature…. even though it’s been decades since she played the role. The interview runs through the usual questions. She’d love to cameo in it, but only if it was a worthwhile part, not just an excuse for her to show up and basically wink at the audience. Interestingly, she doesn’t have picks for any known actresses to replace her - - she’d rather they get an unknown who could handle the character's duality.

Actually, her take on WW’s secret identity was pretty interesting… == TEASER ==

"I've seen the faces of so many people (actresses), but the interesting thing about Wonder Woman is that you really knew her by both characters, because the audience knew she was Wonder Woman when I was playing Diana Prince, so for them it wasn't two different people. And I never dumbed her down. I just thought she needed to be smart and capable, but nobody really knew how smart and capable. It's got to be somebody that you want to be best friends with…"

Actually, seeing as how Carter’s WONDER WOMAN hasn’t aired since ’79, I suppose the younger members of the Comic Vine community might need refresher here. It was from the same era as the Lou FerrignoINCREDIBLE HULK and the Nicholas HammondSPIDER-MAN, when these comics-based shows seriously downplayed the more fantastical elements of the characters’ mythos (and I suppose this is a bit timely given how Marvel and DC are both talking about doing more live-action TV shows.)

Anyway, Carter also brings up the interesting angle of how Wonder Woman was one of the very few leading roles for a woman on TV in the 70s….

"You have to understand that at that time when they were casting there were no women in television. Lindsay Wagner, who is a dear friend, had done a couple of episodes of The Six Million Dollar Man and they killed her off (before she was revived by public demand and given her own spin-off series); Angie Dickinson had a sidekick in Police Woman, and the rest were comedians. There just weren't scripts. They didn't think a woman could hold a show. In so many ways it is a really great thing."

Wonder Woman’s quest to getting a modern movie adaptation may seem Sisphyian, but any of you wanting to see a live-action take on the character might do well to check out the show. As I’m aware, all its three seasons are out in some handy box sets. And I suppose this would be a good time to bring that old question up again - - what actress do you Comic Vine maniacs think has the chops to inherit the bullet-proof bracelets from Carter?

Wonder Woman message boards have all been pining for this actress named Jodi Lyn O'Keefe for a while now:

    Complete with Photoshop and everything:

Only time I remember seeing her in was in a video game called Command & Conquer - Red Alert which you can download on both PS3 and Xbox 360's online arcade stores.  You can just download the DEMO if you want.  She's the girl in the beginning intro scene that briefs you before you go on your 1st mission.

    P.S.
Since they've had so much problems doing a film, maybe go with other options like starting a Smallville-esque TV version of Wonder Woman first before a movie.

well, this is one of the rare cases where I think the visual is so important to who you pick
most of the time, like with Anna Paquin as Rogue for example, hair dye and styling choices can make the rigth actress look the part
but WW has to be statuesque, tough looking, but beautiful
someone like Meghan Gale definitely has the look

but I don't think she can act, so who's to say?
I think belivability is the other HUGE factor
Ben Affleck as DD, Jannifer Garner as Elektra, Topher Grace as Venom- they weren't believable
they seemed almost embarassed, or at least, VERY aware of the fact that they were acting
movies like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, they put in actors who believed in the characters, loved the source material, and put their all into it
I can't stand the idea of another stupid uber famous actor playing a superhero with no idea of how to do the character justice
here's a crazy idea.....why not pick actors who actually like the characters they're going to play?
there's probably a few thousand or so beautiful actors who would LOVE the idea to play Wonder Woman, either because she is their hero, or they grew up loving her and want to see it done the right way
    also.....
Lynda Carter HAS GOT TO BE IN THE MOVIE!!!!
and she should play Athena, IMO

I think the TV show is the single largest reason that Wonder Woman is still relevant to PopCulture (not comic book reading culture) as compared to, say, Thor.  But as a distant touchstone (30 years old) it's no wonder she's struggling to find relevance today.

I actually agree with Jordanstine that a TV series would probably do her icon better.  Shows like Lois & Clark or Bruce Timm's animated Batman sustained the image of the characters in the minds-eye of America for years keeping a relevant version alive.  Movies can do the same thing, but they seem a lot more flash-in-the-pan these days... so much so that you can reboot a franchise like Hulk, Fantastic Four, or X-Men in a scant few years without blinking.  I'd be hard pressed to say Dardevil or Punisher cemented any particular vision of those characters into the minds of the public at large.

But I don't envy the job of the person trying to bring back Wonder Woman in any medium.

I'd have to say an unknown really would be best. the problem with getting these high-paid actors to play well known and loved character (before they were a movie) sometimes I just can't help but not feel totally immersed.

So many people seem focused on what she looks like (It makes since cause she is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the world.) I however am more focused on her acting skills. It's gonna be an action movie I hope she's gonna be able to fully handle the role.

My 6-year old niece loves the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman show.  You should see her do the famous "transformation spin" in the middle of my brother's living room.  As much as I'd like to see a Wonder Woman movie now, if they hold off another decade or more watch out...

I thought Megan Gale was an excellent choice for that failed attempt to make a Justice League movie. I would like to see her get a shot or I guess another chance to audition for the Wonder Woman role since she got the part for the JL movie. An unknown is always the best way to go I think. Look at Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Christopher Reeve , & Christian Bale.

And I don't think Lynda should get a little cameo and a wink to the audience. I agree with her on that. I think she should actually play Hippolyta, Wonder Woman's mother & Queen of the Amazons. I mean it's only logical & respectful to have Lynda play her.

To all the fans posting pictures of swimsuit cover models convinced that whoever plays Wonder Woman must have a certain look, consider that Robert Downey, Jr. played this:

The magic of Hollywood is that anybody can look like anything.  Even height doesn't matter.  You saw The Lord of the Rings, right?  There are a bazillion tricks to make an actor/actress appear "statuesque" that don't even involve computer effects.  So, to whoever ends up making this movie and all the fans who will rant about it:  Don't fixate on looks.  Get an actress who can play strong, composed, stranger-in-a-strange-land and unyielding-compassion and let the makeup department do their job.

yeah, but he was playing a white guy playing a black guy
I usually would agree about not caring about looks
but when the character is princess of the amazons, she needs to be tall and a woman, at least
the rest can be dyed, fixed, altered in post, or whatever else

I'd much rather not see a swim suit model type play the part.
I'd not be able to take it seriously at all.

Hmm... I could actually see  Jennifer Connelly playing the part.

Doesn't matter if she's an unknown, the girl is a PROVEN actress.

    P.S.
She looks like she could also play Jessica Drew.

    @Thunderscream:
Lucy Lawless turned down the role of Wonder Woman 15 years ago when she was doing Xena, why would she play her now? Her career is just fine, with Battlestar Galactica and Spartacus under her belt :)

Maybe not a SI styled swimsuit model (or an even less reputable publication), but I would be happy with the casting of a model if of a certain type.  I've know a few models and while I don't claim to make generalizations about them as a whole, the ones I have met fall into two general categories... the ones who are neurotic (either don't think they're beautiful, have unrealistic beliefs as to where modeling will lead, or use it as a way to subsist whilst the rest of their lives are a trainwreck) and the ones who "have it all" (they have the confidence and security of a person who knows they're beautiful because they've been told all their life that they're beautiful, they have higher learning degrees, they're well spoken / intelligent calm / professional, they're often successful at business and family life).

This is a rough example but contrast Lindsay Lohan to Padma Lakshmi.

To me, the latter category is the kind of personality I'd like to see in a modern take on Wonder Woman.  To bring it back to the article which was less about casting and more about portrayal, Lynda Carter says she played it smart, capable, and friendly... essentially the accessible girl next door or the co-worker in the office (not a dumbed down lust object, but neither was she an Amazonian queen).  I think a nice update, now that popculture is more scifi savvy, would be to enhance the exotic, alien, and authoritative nature of Wonder Woman.  While Carter's Diana Prince was the cute but mousy co-worker, a modern Diana Prince would be more along the lines of an untouchable boss, CEO, or- for the wanton amongst us- teacher/professor.  The "together" models I've met have that sort of alien personality because they're intelligent people and totally confident (consider that 90% of what constitutes the average person's personality is the aggregation of where their insecurities, hurts, and rejections have molded them into... then imagine a person who's rarely rejected and nearly always adored)... though a few have that tinge of isolation/loneliness (either guys are too intimidated to approach them or the ones that do always are of a certain type or class) which also works well with the Wonder Woman / Diana Prince mythos, in my opinion.

Again, apologies to any models out there not matching my personal impressions.

Addressing looks, I think the goal is to cast for Diana Prince because that's where the acting, the face, the nuance, the relationships, the characterization, etc. all comes out... the costume, special effects, and action sequences go a long way towards making any woman Wonder Woman... at which point, I doubt you'll be all that focused on her face or, given the gaudiness of the costume, all that much screen-time really... and how much acting is really necessary to grunt, throw stuff, fight, and say one liners when appearing and departing?  So you cast for the best Diana Prince ever and Wonder Woman will follow.  The question is whether, today, we want a mousy type that follows Steve Trevor around everywhere or perhaps someone more assertive?  (Of course, that said, this is a compromise... if I could have my ideal casting for Wonder Woman she would be according to the mythical amazon mold, taller and not as slight as the vast majority of popular actresses or models.)

That he was playing "Russell Crowe" playing a black guy doesn't matter how he looked in the film.  He didn't look like Robert Downey, Jr; that's the point.  And again, no the actress doesn't have to be super tall.  There are camera tricks, forced-perspective, CGI, and the ol' reliable have-her-stand-on-a-box.

And while we're splitting hairs here...

Diana is an Amazon by name, not blood.  She was created out of clay by her mother's love and the will of the gods.  She's a golem.  She needn't be tall, or Mediterranean-looking because she doesn't have any of that genetic material to inherit.  She's a clean slate.  She could look like Beyonce, or Monica Bellucci, or Courtney Love, or Judy Dench!
