Hitting a brick wall
All three stories here uncharacteristically got my attention in relation to the concept behind them but then all three dropped the ball with execution. The first has to do with a ghost train which saboteurs are using to steal military technology. The second has to do with aliens playing chess with the planet Earth on a cosmic chessboard. The third is about aliens who are invading through rain clouds. Each of the stories has a decent setup (at least in terms of the golden age) but then sort of falls flat when it tries to bring some scientific rational into it (at one point Diana even insists she can find a scientific rational and then explains it some impossible way.) In a sense this makes it worse than the usual golden age issue because I can see what it could have been but didn't achieve.
