razzatazz's Wonder Woman #189 - Red For Death! review

    Where did this come from?

I have been putting off reading this issue because of the cover and the concept.  Diana is heading into communist China to  find I-Ching who is searching for his daughter.  I expected a lot of of more cat-and-mouse style antics of trying to find her or Doctor Cyber, but the issue was not about that at all.  First of all, Diana and Patrick have to sneak into the country somehow and do so by disguising themselves as Chinese and flying a plane in.

Having different coloured skin is basically their only disguise.

They are eventually shot down but survive and find I-Ching.  He is no longer after his daughter rather he is aiding an entire village to escape from China to Hong Kong.  They have been ordered to resettle to the north where it is assumed they will be worked to death in the mines.  Diana of course aids them in their escape.  the first half of the issue where they try to infiltrate China is a little slow, but the second half was very interesting.  It shows the village making preparations to pilot an old riverboat 50 miles down a river to Hong Kong.  In the end there is a decent battle on the boat and Diana shoots down a MiG with a machine gun.  In the end the villagers are saved thanks to the villager's efforts and the actions of the three heroes.  It was a compelling issue - it is the first one I think I have ever read where a hero stands up to a totalitarian government like that and saves a village.  Definitely a good read.
