Wolverine goes searching for a man involved in a domestic abuse case against a wife and daughter.
Logan (Wolverine) stands outside the morgue of a Westchester County hospital, eavesdropping on two police officers, Cowaher and Dunleavy, discussing the death of a local woman, Linda Higgins. Dunleavy points out a large welt on the woman's back.
In the waiting room, a doctor delivers the news to Linda's sister and brother-in-law, Michelle and John Kole. He further informs them Linda's daughter, Jane, is in critical condition, suffering from head trauma. Michelle blames Linda's husband.
Logan gets on his motorcycle and heads to the Higgins household, not far from Xavier's school, recalling his previous encounters with the abusive man and regretting he didn't permanently stop him before the inevitable happened. There, Logan sneaks past the police stake-out to examine the crime scene, noting footprints, oil stains on the driveway and an empty beer can. Trusting his instincts, he follows a trail of oil and cans down the highway.
Farther ahead, in a motel for the night before heading to Albany to catch a flight to Canada, Higgins begins to lose patience with his sobbing son Richie. He tells the boy to stop crying and accept what's happened.
Cowaher and Dunleavy consult a retired coroner for his assessment of Linda's injuries, and he surmises the welt came from a shovel or similar object. The officers contact the stake-out team to look for a shovel, which they find and secure.
The next morning, Richie asks to use the bathroom before he and his dad leave for Albany. After checking to make sure his son didn't leave any clues behind, they drive off.
Logan checks a series of motels along the trail, finally finding the one Higgins stayed at. After the maid tells him they left about a half an hour prior, Logan finds Richie's message, scrawled in crayon on the back of the bathroom door: "Albinee airport 9:00".
At the police station, Cowaher and Dunleavy run the fingerprints on the shovel handle against Higgins' filed prints, but come up negative. Then, on a hunch, they pull up the local school system's child fingerprint database to look at Richie's.
Higgins' daughter Jane wakes up in the hospital much improved and asks her aunt and uncle about Linda and Richie. When John replies that her father took Richie away, she asks if it's because Richie hurt their mother. Meanwhile, the police confirm the prints on the shovel match Richie's.
At the Albany Airport, Logan seizes Higgins from behind, intending to turn him in to the police. Upon seeing Logan, Richie shouts out that he himself killed his mother. Higgins relates what had happened: arriving at home partially drunk, he struck Linda, who then grabbed a gun from his car and threatened to shoot him. In desperation, Richie hit his mother in the back with a shovel, causing her to fall forward against the porch steps with Jane between her body and the ground. The impact broke her neck and injured Jane's head.
Still holding Higgins responsible for the whole affair, Logan detains him until the police arrive to take him and Richie into custody.
