Winnetou last edited by fesak on 06/22/19 03:34AM View full history

These comics are based on stories written by Karl May (February 25, 1842 – March 30, 1912) was one of the best selling German writers of all time, about two of the most popular Western heroes in the world, popular in German speaking countries, they are almost unknown in the English speaking world.

Karl May and his pair of heroes however are whom most Germans get there idea of what the American West and Native Americans are like.

It’s clamed that over 200 million copies of his books have been printed, with his stories about Winnetou and Old Shatterhand being among the most popular (they were prased by both Adolf Hitler and Albert Einstein!)

It’s also been said that almost every German alive has read at least one Karl May western.

So of course there have been a number of graphic illustrated versions of the stories, the first appearing in 1940.

This series was a popular comic interpretation of Winnetou the Apache and his German-American sidekick Old Shatterhand starting in 1981.
