The Star Trek franchise was created in 1964 by Gene Roddenberry, who eventually had his idea produced in 1966 in the form of the original television series Star Trek. Though relatively short-lived, lasting only three seasons before being cancelled in 1969, Star Trek proved incredibly popular. It spawned four live action spin-offs, one animated series and currently 11 (soon to be 12) feature films. It has became a cult phenomenon, and is currently one of the most popular science fiction franchises in the world.

It first appeared in comics in 1967 in Gold Key's Star Trek. Currently, IDW Publishing holds the copyright to Star Trek Comics.
