    Watchmen

Team » Watchmen appears in 40 issues.

Watchmen is a twelve-issue comic book limited series created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. The grouping of heroes and villains contained in the work are not, in fact, named "The Watchmen", though they were at one point referred to as "Crimebusters". Rorschach, Nite Owl and Dr. Manhattan were the team's primary heroes.

Looking at the different images and trailers, we can see that Zack Snyder went all out in creating even the smallest details to resemble the graphic novel adaption of Watchmen.  It turns out there is one detail that was left out.  Laurie Juspeczyk's character (Silk Spectre) smoked a lot in the book.  In the movie, she seems to have kicked the habit.  What was the reason for this?

It turns out that Alan Horn, the President of Warner Bros, hates smoking.  It was okay for the Comedian to smoke since he was sort of a 'bad guy.'  Zack Snyder even said, "I was sad, but it was either that or...the movie wouldn't have been made, literally."

Wow.  She did smoke some weird looking cigarettes.  At least her cigarette pipe thing was weird.  I'm no expert on smoking so I'm not sure of the point.

Is this a big deal?  Should she have been allowed to smoke in order to stay fully true to the book?

I'm okay with her not smoking, but it really does seem like a dumb thing to be left out. What's the big deal? James Bond smoked all the time and still drinks all the time and he's got twenty something movies under his belt.

If Snyder is telling the truth.....the movie "not being made" cause a lead character smoked would be ludicrous.

F##k Alan Horn and his Nazi sh!t. The Comedian can smoke because he's the "bad guy"? They were all almost neutral, that was the point, each character has their flaws and each, aw screw it. These fat rich basturds don't care, they just care about more green, commercializing whatever they can get their pudgy dick-beaters on to sell condoms and coffee, and anything that has a common act of deviance that could impend upon that cash flow is banished and put out of sight. The big problem I have is the fact that Laurie's smoking habit made her that much more human. The movie looks good, but this corporate sh!t pisses me off.

I don't think it's a huge deal.  It's one small detail cut out.
However, I do think that many are taking the "No Smoking" thing too far when it comes to film.  I remember reading an article a few years back where a group was trying to have all movies edited so that all cigarettes were removed.  Personally, I think that is going way too far...

There are a lot of things about this movie I was surprised they were following to the book so well.  So in the bigger picture, I don't think having this detail left out is a big deal.

Back to the whole smoking thing, I had a real problem with this when Joey Q decided to take smoking out of Marvel. I'm no Wolverine fan, but smoking a stogy was something that defined him as a character, the "I'll do whatever I want, so 'F' you" attitude. It saddens me as a smoker and ex-smoker.

I've never smoked and I hate smoking, but smoking defines a lot of the character. And to remove it from them is stupid.

    When did that happen?

Speaking of smoking, I remember a issue from the 90s in Spider-Man where MJ was smoking and she couldn't quit. Peter took her to see a dude who had to have a bunch of machines and wires linked to him from smoking, scared the crap out of her and got her to quit.

I still can't decide if that was a jackass move or a smart one.

I'm not one to support smoking at all (at. all.) but that's kinda dumb. Wolverine just stops? Didn't Nick Fury smoke all the time, too? Kinda gimps the character a bit.

Smoking may not be a healthy habit but it looks great in films. Casablanca would not have been the same without Humphrey Bogart smoking like a chimney. That's really stupid he wouldn't let the character smoke. She smokes the entire book. She only talked to the Comedian because she wanted a light.

Maybe they just didn't want to show her smoking out of that crazy crack-pipe she smokes out of... 'Cause cigarettes wouldn't fit, for me at least.

This movie wasn't made for ten year olds. If we're old enough to watch Watchmen style killing, then I'm sure we can watch someone smoking a pipe. Sheesh, dumbass rule. Smoking really defines Silk Spectre II as much as it defines Comedian.

You can say the same about the rape scene that they included in the film.

However, I don't think it was an issue about the character itself smoking. I think it was more about the film producer not liking smoking in general and made it his personal preference to have her not do so.

No, the movie does not revolve around her smoking.  However, as others said...it is part of her character.

***Like when her and Dan fight off the knotheads in the alleyway...it's nearly a sexual experience for them, and she lights a cigarette in the same way somebody does after having sex. This ties in later on in the movie with them in the Owl Ship and how it seems these two are so sexually dysfunctional that they can only get it on after they perform as superheroes.

***Her first meeting with the Comedian and it seems he's hitting on her...he lights what we presume is her first cigarette. Her mom comes in and she's all embarrassed about being caught smoking. It just changes the dynamic of the scene.

***When she is in the owl ship, the ONLY reason she hits the button with the flame on it is because she wants a light for her cigarette. Yet in the movie there is no logical reason why she pushes that button.

There are other scenes in the comic book where her smoking is every bit a part of her character and the scenes she is in as Dan's impotence or Rorschach's psychotic delusions. The comedian can chomp on cigars in the movie (which is fine...it's part of his character) but Laurie gets her cigarettes taken away? It just pisses me off. Of all the minor changes, this is one of the major minor changes that is completely unnecessary.
