Despite the fact that I like the cosmic setting as much as any other if not more, I have never been particularly drawn to those of John Carter.  There is the fact that Mars is too close and that how it is shown is flawed as well as well as the generally ridiculous "costume" which Dejah wears.  Recently though I picked up the White Apes of Mars miniseries and I liked what they had done there overall so I thought I might give the main series a chance as well.  It seems as though from the first impression that the main series will be to my liking though as it tends to avoid a lot of the things which I dislike about the characters and focus just on some science fiction/fantasy fun.  Here Dejah is forced to marry a buffoonish son of an emperor to keep the peace, but things don't quite work out as she thought they might before the wedding day.  This is a pretty good introduction to the characters and the revised setting.
