In terms of quantity, it is much more common for characters to be creator-owned (or company-licensed) than owned by their publisher. However, in comics two of the biggest publishers worldwide (DC and Marvel) traditionally own all their characters. This page is meant to help distinguish characters that are owned by the creator from those owned by the publisher in cases where it's not immediately obvious.

DC Entertainment’s creator-driven imprint, Vertigo, kicked off Comic-Con: International: San Diego with an impressive Fall slate consisting of 12 new #1s set to release over 12 consecutive weeks beginning in October. The announcement came on their panelThursday evening when comic book and literary heavyweights joined the ranks including Darwyn Cooke, Gilbert Hernandez, Michael Allred, Holly Black, Lauren Beukes and Gail Simone, among others.

Vertigo, best known for its bold storytelling, will continue to push the boundaries of genre fiction – horror, fantasy, crime thriller, scifi – with these new releases.

“This is a groundbreaking rollout for Vertigo and all 12 new titles represent the imprint at its core: smart and irreverent stories that will take you someplace stranger," stated Shelly Bond, executive editor of Vertigo. "I can't be more excited about the diversity of projects and creative teams we have lined up, from Vertigo veterans to a powerhouse of new voices and rising art stars."

"When Shelly Bond offered me an opportunity to launch something new at Vertigo, I took that as a chance to fast talk her into collaborating with Gilbert Hernandez, one of the world's great cartoonists," stated renowned artist Darwyn Cooke. "THE TWILIGHT CHILDREN has me excited in a way I haven't felt since I started work on Parker. To enter Gilbert's world and help him bring this remarkable story to Vertigo and our readers...well, I'm gushing, it's an honor."

These are some good looking books! The one I am most excited for of the bunch is Art Ops. I love Allreds art, but havent read many of the books he has been on because I havent been too interested in them. But this one looks like it could be a ton of fun! My other top 2 are the Twilight Children, and Lucifer.

Normally I'm not that into indie titles, but these all look really good, I think I'll give them all a try. I know I;ll probably be sticking with The Twilight Children since it has Darwyn Cooke on board.

@captainmarvel4ever: well, if you are into the Big Two, or you are a DC guy, may consider Vertigo not as an "Indie" but as what it is: a DC sub-world :) All of it's title are [now] out of any DC continuity [I'm not about Lucifer anyway], but you may simply consider them into "very long and very separated and different" DC Universe, such as Earth-2222 or Earth-4000

I'm some sort of compulsive order for Comics Universe, and this aid me anytime I buy a Vertigo or an Epic Title :)

Oh, I found this summary about the new Lucifer series on teh Los Angeles times website

"Black and Garbett’s ongoing “Lucifer” series will find God dead and the erstwhile lord-of-Hell-turned-nightclub-impresario accused of the murder by no less than his own angelic brother, Gabriel. If Lucifer can prove his innocence, not only will his sins be forgotten – but he’ll be welcomed back into the Silver City."

So doesn't sound like its following the show at least, but they're still rebooting the character apparently...

    EDIT: another quote:

The first name we will know isn’t so much a suspect as the former angel charged to solve the murder of The Presence — Gabriel.

I really loved Gabriel’s story line from “Hellblazer.” He ended up with his heart crushed and being sent to Hell as a mortal — which meant he was still in play. I was interested in the idea of forcing he and Lucifer to investigate a murder together. Gabriel knows Lucifer in a way that few other beings do, as a brother. And Gabriel has plenty of reasons to hate him, so there’s a lot of interesting tension. Yet, they also have a common cause.

So they're referencing old Hellblazer continuity in this? So they WILL be continuing Lucifer's story in the old Vertigo shared universe.... but somehow Lucifer is out and about despite what happened at the end of his old ongoing? Cautiously intrigued now

Anyway, cautious optimism about Lucifer aside, YEEEEEEEEES, THANK YOU DC for finally paying attention to my beloved Vertigo again.

What was once the most prestigious and innovative comics imprint in North America had been wasting away these past few years, with the New 52 almost delivering it a death blow. It needed this new blood with these name creators. Now just make sure to actually promote these books when its time for them to come out. You can have the most interesting and star-studded line-up of books on the planet, but they won't move any units if you don't actually push them!

@lagozzino: God dead? Lucifer and Michael created death, they are above death and God is above them all....

Why are they doing this to Lucifer, that was my 2 favorite comics of all time, they are gonna ruin it all

Lucifer by Mike Carey was epic with epic ending where Lucifer leaves DC,

    I feel so crushed

Are you saying that Sandman isn't intended for comic fans? Or is the "are" a typo, and you're saying that only true fans of the medium enjoy Sandman?

    just wondering :)

@jonny_anonymous: I think it transcends the medium in the sense that it's an undeniably great work of literature.......that also happens to be a comic book. I view it more as a pinnacle of the comic book medium, rather than something that is above the medium itself -- that sounds a little pretentious :o
