    Brief History

The team's roster includes the powerful telekinetic super-soldier Colonel America, the beautiful but deadly super-spy Black Widow, vampire hunter Blade, size-manipulating and former Excalibur member Micromax, long-time adventurer Dominic Fortune and the memory-altering Retcon

When the terrorist group Al Qaeda discovered Vanguard's existence after capturing and torturing Micromax, they had telepathic operative, Jaafar Yoosuf possess  NYPD Detective  Stacy Dolan, using her to shoot and seemingly kill the team's leader Colonel America. However, he was saved by his powers and healed himself following his autopsy. Vanguard's agents, unaware of Yoosuf's involvement or their leader's survival, descended on Dolan, intending to kill her.

Colonel America, learning Vanguard's secrecy had been compromised decided to kill everyone involved to prevent Vanguard's black operations becoming public knowledge. Retcon used her powers to convince Colonel America that he had already killed Dolan, the rest of Vanguard and the then-present Thing, allowing them all to escape.

He later discovered Retcon's duplicity and briefly captured and tortured Blade to locate the others, but Blade either escaped or was released, and it is uncertain if the Colonel's hunt for his former agents has been abandoned; Colonel America himself continues to serve with Vanguard alongside a replacement Retcon.
