The creator of Redfox (known under the pseudonym of simply "Fox") initially had a deal with the publisher Harrier to produce a series of eight issues of the comic (this ended up being extended to 10 to allow the story arc to finish). Finding at the end of the agreement that he still had more that he wanted to do with the character he and Christina Bell set up Valkyrie Press to continue publication themselves.

Later Valkyrie Press also decided to re-publish and complete Bryan Talbot's The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, a British comic strip that had had a turbulent publishing history over the previous decade.

The company came to an abrupt end in 1989 when Chris Bell left to have a baby.
