A complete disappointment
Since the beginning of the new mutant revolution, Bendis has been building to this issue--the confrontation between SHIELD and the X-Men, the discovery of the man who's been constructing and unleashing new sentinels. And just as the helicarrier arrives at the Jean Grey school and the sentinels swarm its gates, the story abruptly ends.
Instead of a climactic battle, there's a single panel depicting the students gawking at the helicarrier overhead. We see the guns fire. A few students fly into the air. Then inexplicably, its over. After Battle of the Atom, the bar has been significantly raised. This one falls far short.
Then there's the whole issue with the villain--the mysterious figure with the fish bowl on his head. For ten pages, Cyclops and Beast exchange words about his identity: "There's only one man who could do this!" "I can't believe its him!" Then in the closing panels you discover its none other than...well, the character doesn't matter. In another disappointing showdown, Cyclops shoots him with one eye beam, the villain falls out of his desk chair, breaks his fish tank and dies.
Character motivation is essential to the quality of a story. The villain's motivation? "I *cough cough* hate you!" That's kind of how I feel about Bendis right now.
In defense of the writer, Bendis is the mastermind behind the unique direction of the X-Men comics. Battle of the Atom and the All-New X-Men story lines are both incredible. The upcoming Original Sin tie-in may have handcuffed Bendis and his typically deliberate and well-paced plotting.
