Solid issue slightly hurt by multiple artists...
Rick Remender's "Uncanny X-Force" has consistently delivered strong character driven stories laced with cool, gritty action. While not as strong as the last book, issue #13 still runs with what has made the series great. This is the third part of The Dark Angel Saga and has the team in another dimension searching for a Life Seed, the only thing that can save Warren who has become the heir of Apocalypse. Remender has already established several fantastic character dynamics between the team members and here he expands on the interesting relationships with the new dimension's X-Men. We also have a showdown between the team and a group known as The Black Legion who are led by their version of Wolverine. All of this leads to some interesting character moments and some pretty wild action sequences.
But this issue isn't without flaws. There was tons of potential with The Black Legion but we get almost no character development with any of them. I understand that they aren't meant to be the main focus but with such interesting characters it's a shame more isn't done with them. But a bigger problem is with the visuals. Scot Eaton is brought in to help Mark Brooks on some of the pages and while Eaton's a good artist, I really love Brook's work. The problem is, even with Dean White's strong colors, the two different art styles don't flow well together. Neither artist's work is bad but when put together they just doesn't click.
Problems aside, this is still a solid issue. It's a little rough around the edges but there's no denying Remender's ability to handle these characters. This is a strong story and features an ending that sets the table for a fun next issue. I'm just hoping Brooks is able to draw the entire book.
