Lindelof's Ultimate Brawl gets Less Violent and More Confusing
In the penultimate installment of Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk, we get a series of small stories that somehow combines for a mildly entertaining but sometimes irritating read. We begin with conversation between Wolverine and a panda (!?!), one between Wolverine and Nick Fury that gives new (gimmicky) insight into Wolverine's power, a flashback to Ultimate She Hulk's contribution to the skirmish, which includes a reference to the first issue in the form of an empty voice bubble, and the final cliff hanger into how this mess will finally conclude. Overall, it felt very transitional and lacked anything to make it feel like essential reading.
That's not to say that there wasn't some gold in this mine of mediocrity. The interaction between Wolverine and Forge was laugh out loud funny and when applied to specific characters, Leinil Yu's gritty art style is always amazing. This book seems to be going through an identity crisis as it is very self aware of its own flaws, but thus far has done little to appease its readers. Everyone felt a slow start with the first 2 issues and expected a sick brawl through the end. Three years later, the story got going again still lacking the intense action you would expect from Wolverine and The Hulk. What we've had so for is a bizzare, over the , and out of place interpretations of these 2 icons that feels a bit like a comedy sketch. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a fight in the last issue. Pick this one up if you want to read the series all the way through
