"It's funny what happens when everything changes."
Synopsis: The remaining mutants in the Ultimate Universe struggle to survive.
What's Good?
Ever since Ultimatum, the Ultimate Universe is in a dark place, especially for Mutants. With Magneto and Charles Xavier gone, along with many others, and the world finding out that Mutants were created by the US government, it makes an incredible scenario. And who else but Nick Spencer is suited for telling it?
Coming out of Ultimate Fallout, Spencer takes issue #4 and expands it in the first issue. He really shows the darker side of this already chaotic Ultimate Universe where Spencer stated in an interview, "It's a world where the relationship between human and mutant is broken beyond fixing." It's like the twisted version of the holocaust for Mutants. There are familiar faces in this issue. People wondering what happened to Storm and Colossus after Ultimatum, that question is answered. The group from Ultimate: X are now a part of this series more than ever. Kitty Pryde, Johnny Storm, and Bobby Drake make their own group who reluctantly goes to rescue one of their own, Rogue.
Paco Medina is the artist for the series, and while it is different from any other Ultimate series, it still looks good. There's not much action in this issue, but everyone looks recognizable for those who have been keeping up with the Ultimate Universe.
What's Bad?
Despite keeping up with the Ultimate Universe, there was a lot to sink in with this first issue, as Mutants haven't really been touched on after Ultimatum except for Ultimate X (which had more delays then I can count). This issue has four angles to it, and that may break the series as a whole depending on how Spencer takes the series.
Overall: Like I wrote before, it's the scenario that makes this series interesting. It's a darker version of X-Men in which anything can happen.
