    History

Captain Tristam Maurer was one of the founders of Amnesty Bay in 1799, and keeper of the other lighthouse in Aquaman's hometown. He disappeared without a trace and in a suspicious way, which led to the existence of numerous stories and accounts about his figure over the years.

When Arthur returns from the Island of Unspoken Water, along with the Sea Gods of the World, it was decided that the latter would live in Maurer's lighthouse, rebuilt thanks to the efforts of them and Aquaman. When they celebrate a party to rebuild the lighthouse, a monster emerges from the waters and attacks Aquaman and his allies. A battle that is interrupted the moment the light from the lighthouse itself is destroyed.

Later, during the funeral of the young man who transported food and food to the lighthouse, Tristam Maurer introduces himself to Arthur and tells him his story. Maurer explains to Aquaman that as a child, he created monsters with his imagination that were powerful and helped him against his adversaries. As he reached adulthood, he and his buildings became more and more violent, evoking despair wherever he went. Because of this, and because of feelings of guilt, he fell into alcoholism, since it was the only method to keep these impulses under control. In an act of penance, after losing his entire crew, he decides to create the Maurer lighthouse in Amnesty Bay, and settle to live there for the rest of his life. But, some time later, he disappeared without warning and was never heard from again. After meeting Arthur's monster and his allies, Tristam acknowledges that the monster was him and that it appeared, about 200 years after his disappearance, as he felt that Amnesty Bay was in trouble and he felt that danger was approaching. to your home.

After this confession, the attack of Black Manta and Mecha Manta on Aquaman's home happens, at which point Maurer realizes that he was summoned by Amnesty Bay to fight against that attack on the city. Following the defeat of Mecha Manta, Tristam Maurer reappears in Amnesty Bay to celebrate the marriage between Aquaman and Mera in his capacity as ship captain.

    Influences

This character is clearly reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft marine monsters stories, who has been introduced into the Aquaman cosmology during Kelly Sue DeConnick's run.
