Top Cow Productions was founded in 1992 by Marc Silvestri. It began as being partnered with Image and so was into creating superheroes but after the two parted ways for a time in '96 the Top Cow Universe leaned into the fantasy genre with their successful titles, Witchblade and The Darkness.
They also began helping creators generate their own series such as Fathom, Midnight Nation and Wanted and brought Lara Croft: Tomb Raider to the comic book world. They then made a deal in 2006 (currently exptending to 2008) with Marvel Comics that has allowed them to use several of Marvel's characters in crossovers.
Also, they have begun to distribute their comics online with the help of IGN, such comics included in this offer are The Darkness #1-50, Tomb Raider #1-50 and Witchblade #1-50.
Top Cow Productions more reknown publications before The Darkness and Witchblade were Cyberforce and Rising Star. Cyberforce can be said to be the catalyst for the rise of some of Top Cow's best artists, including Michael Turner and Ken Lashley.
