Always glad to see this bumped again. It's frustrating because after a year of this we still haven't seen Tim with his own book, so the biggest reason for going with "Red Robin"--having "Robin" in the title of his solo book--doesn't even matter. They could have spent this entire year with us getting used to a new name for him while he's on a team book.

For all my complaints, this week's "awesome art picks" included a Damian "Red Robin" redesign by Peter Nguyen that fixes a lot of the problems I have with the new 52 costume:

Wow, the Red Robin Damian redesign is soooo much better than the actual Red Robin costume:

The fact that the "wings" fold up into a jacket is brilliant, the one-direction bandoleer is a great decision, the rocket boots look much better than the idea of a jetpack, and to top it all off he worked in Tim's staff. It's almost enough to make me like the Red Robin name. (It's not, but almost.)

I think Redwing is a good name. That way he can keep the red and black color scheme, and Nightwing can go back to his blue and black appearance.

I've seen the suggesstion that he be called Raptor. I don't think that really fits Tim; it sounds like it should be a villain's name.

what makes you say that?

too bad DC no longer owns the rights to Lamont Cranston, Tim would have made a badass Shadow.

Raptor... I don't know, to me it just doesn't sound right. I can't really put a reason why.

And Shadow would be pretty cool.

Stay with Red Robin: The "Red Robin" series was pretty well received, people are kind of used to the character name, and it has "Robin" in the title so people will know what to expect. Why rock the boat? I might be the only one who has a problem with this after all.

Reintroduce an old moniker: AKA, the Nightwing solution. Flamebird would work, wouldn't it? Well, maybe not, but there has to be other old superhero names that Drake could pick up for himself. All the writers are into continuity porn so they might actually like the idea.

Go name-less: The "Dr Hank Pym"-slash-"Jean Grey" solution, could Tim Drake support a book without being in costume? Probably not—even Oracle had a cool name and symbol—but it's a question worth asking.

Swipe another franchise's moniker: The best example I can think of here is, well, Nightwing again because that was originally a Superman-franchise deal, but also I think of Renee Montoya as the new Question. Montoya was definitely a "Bat" supporting character, and still moves closely in those circles, hanging out with Batwoman and Huntress. But it worked, and worked really well. Tim Drake as "Richard Dragon?" Okay, bad example, but you get what I mean.

Totally new name: Then my personal favorite, let him spread his wings (Note: I do not like the wings) and be his own unique character. This can be riskier, of course, but without a solo title anyway, you'd have time to introduce his new moniker in a team book and have it picked up later.

I say go with NightWing... Why not Bruce Wayne is "dead" and NightWing took over batmans job. So he has no time to be NightWing and raise Damian Wayne but help Tim with his troubles and be batman all at the same time. He just can't do it. NightWing is a kick ass hero and was originally a robin so let it end with a robin. NightWing fits Tim anyways. Plus by now he is the size of Dick Grayson anyways. Plus he knows how to use a staff and could get the hang of NightWings weapons with the help of Dick Grayson. Anybody agree?

I think you're behind current events a bit. Since the revamp, Dick Grayson is Nightwing, and Bruce Wayne came back even before Flashpoint.

Edit: I just realized I didn't answer your question. I think Nightwing is a fine name but I like it for Dick Grayson. While it wasn't technically original, it had gone unused for so long that it was practically a unique option for him to strike out on his own. One of the reasons I don't like "Red Robin" is because it's not unique to Tim and was instead originally conceived as a Dick Grayson mantle (Kingdom Come) and then was used in-continuity as a Jason Todd costume (Countdown) before finally being used by a minor villain (Ulysses Armstrong). I'd rather Tim get something unique to him.

I dislike the name as well but I have gotten used to it. I say go with Gray Ghost, Red Falcon, or something else. I do think Tim needs to go his seperate ways because of something serious that happens where he is doing the solo act with a new identity.

i can agree with you, but red hulk is called hulk sometimes. red hulk came to differentiate between regular hulk and his evil counterpart at the time, same with red she hulk. also the dark in dark avengers isnt really a color, that's just so we the reader can tell that it's villains pretending to be avengers. in universe they were called the avengers

I still think Raptor is good. I wouldn't be too surprised if Dc made Tim take on the Flamebird or Nightwing mantled dice neither will be using it.

Whoa, yeah, totally forgot that she's going by Hawkfire now.

So Flamebird is up for grabs. Course then you'd have "Flamebird and Bluebird" and now that Damian is gone there's really no competing Robin. So now he's "Red Robin" and there is no Robin oh lord DC why?

@fodigg: Flamebird always equated to the sidekick or female counterpart of Nightwing to me. Dick and Jason took identities from someone who inspired/motivated them but wasn't apart of the Bat-Family. I'd like it if Tim could do the same. It doesn't look like that will happen though . Funnily enough, Chuck Dixon proposed that Tim take over for Ted Kord briefly but that ship has sailed. Maybe Red Dragon.

My only complaint is that every time I google 'Red Robin'' I get information on the restaurant.

...Personally, I kind of like the idea of him being called The Insider. I actually think he would have been a better choice to go undercover for Bruce, since It seems more up his alley as opposed to Dick. Dick can take over leading The Titans. On one hand, Insider/Tim gets a mission that really works in his skills as a detective (I think,) while we get a little insight into how Nightwing is as a leader in the New 52 combined with how he differs as a whole from Tim as a person/dealing with people, so that we (hopefully) and the team, get to learn more and appreciate Tim once he's back.

Just a thought. I also liked another idea I read here earlier, calling him The Detective. The Detective/Insider could probably be duel identities in the same way Bruce used the Matches Malone name.

Unfortunately, this seems like it won't change anytime soon. Considering there's been two revamps in five years and he's still being called Red Robin.

Unless the restaurant chain decides to sue over name rights, which would be stupid considering it's free advertising for them.

I know, I know, this thread hasn't been used in 2 years, I just still don't quite like the name. He's my favorite Robin and I just can't get over how ridiculous his name is. I just always think 'Reeed Robin! Yummm!'

Anyway, time for me to move on. As the previous poster said 'whatcha gonna do'.

Dont like it. Pre 52 it had a good reason to exist and what it meant and where it came from where far more important than it being a restaurant name. In the new 52 its meaningless and just plain bad/lazy.
