Look at the Iron Man film series.

    Iron Man: 585,174,222.

    Iron Man 2: 623,933,331

    Iron Man 3: 1,199,002,239

The Iron Man films were more successful than Thor, but look at that big boost between Iron Man 2 and 3. The Avengers gave Iron Man a big boost. So do you think Thor 2 will make it past 1 billion?

    Thor: 449,300,000

No. Definitely not. Hype and expectations just aren't there. I do think it'll be fantastic though. Probably will be one of the most unique cbm, films to date. Due to the direction Alan Taylor is taking this film.

Hardly think so, Thor is not as famous as other characters in popular culture. Nevertheless i think that The Dark World is going to be an awesome film.

Hemsworth just isn't the star that Downey Jr. is, who was already relatively famous before putting on the Iron Man armor. Iron Man was also the lead character out of The Avengers so having the most screen time and dialogue was greatly beneficial for him. Unless future trailers for Thor 2 are superb and help build up anticipation, I highly doubt The Dark World tops the 1 billion mark, which is okay. It would be a very good success if it surpassed 500 million, but if it exceeds expectations and is a really great film it could pick up steam and approach the 800 million mark or something. I'm just looking forward to the actual film itself as I feel it has a lot of potential, since the main focus will be Thor traversing the Nine Realms.

This is the movie I been waiting for all year. And Thor is definitely my all-time favorite Marvel hero.

But, I don't think this movie will hit 1 billion.

I'm sure it will do pretty good though.

There aren't that many people outside of consistant comic book readers who will go out and see The movie. Most people will see the trailer and think oh look he blonde guy from the avengers movie.

No way, it'll probably come to around 700 mil, so just more than Iron Man 2, but less than 3.

Doubt it. Better than the first one for sure. It all depends how Marvel markets it, using Avengers as a marketing agent(which is likely) and the amazingness of the second and third trailers as well as posters and tv spots.

nope, i think none of the " Marvel Cinematic Universe" films will beak the billion dollr mark until Avengers 2( or whatever it is called) comes along. But i think it will be a sure bet to break through. Personally i am most excited about Guardians of the Galaxy.

If it does it will be because of Loki, but I doubt it. Iron Man did it because he is the most popular character in Avengers.

Im sure itll be a great movie but it wont break 500 million. Iron Man is simply on another level of poularity when compared to Thor. Though now that I think about it Loki had a huge surge in popularity after the Avengers so maybe it will break that 500 million mark and hit something closer to 600 million but I wouldnt bet money on it.

I dont think so. Thor just isnt that popular, even amongst comic fans. And as someone pointed out, this movie doesnt have RDJ. Iron Man wasnt that popular either, but RDJ made the character and now people have started following him with dedication.

Loki is the closest thing to a star that the Thor movies have.

As much as i like Thor and as much as i think he is one of the coolest marvel Hero on big screen, his fan base are limited. As per fan base for Captain America.

Its very unlikely for them to be able to make as much money as Iron Man, even if they are just as good. Thats just a sad part of it.

I think Iron Man 3 absorbed most of the momentum gained from The Avengers. IM3 was also pretty controversial on critical reception and people liking it vs not liking.

Plus. Thor isn't going to have RDJ - who sells himself.

I could see Thor get up to 750 mil...but I doubt it will break 1 bill.

I really do hope Marvel steps up Thor's power though in this movie. They toned him down for the first Thor (cause he was power stripped most of the movie) and he had to be a member of the team in Avengers. I'm hoping for Man of Steel-type displays of power from him.

People who arent big fans thought he did a good job, but he is not going to be remembered as one of the iconic portrayals like say RDJ as Iron Man, Chris Reeve as Superman, or Heath Ledger as Joker. Essentially, there is a difference between being good enough, and being great or even more influential than the character youre playing.

@deaditegonzo: ok well my point would be that you don't have to define the character in a new way for you to be a star. He's done a good job. IMO a lot better than I thought he would. And it's undeniable tht he's a rising star. So to your initial post, I would contend this film had MANY stars. Lots a great supporting actors as well (including 2 Oscar winners).

Yeah, they all do pretty good, but Hiddleson's Loki is the only one comparable to RDJ level of recognize-ability, where just that characters presence is a greater draw than all the marketing the world.

I have a prediction, and it of course depends largely on this film performs, but if they make another sequel, and Loki is not featured (or part of the advertising) we will see a rare drop in box office.

No its highly unlikely, but i do think its going to gross anywhere between the nature of 500 to 800 million.

The only reason Iron man 3 broke the billion dollar mark, is because Robert Downey jr stole the show in the Avengers.

Thor TDW won't beat MoS domestic numbers, but I think it can worldwide assuming it rides the Avengers wave. It did very well overseas, the first one that is.

I'm predicting 600-750 mil worldwide when all is said and done.

The one thing Thor does have is Loki. And he has a huge fanbase comprised of fangirls so its possible they'll come out in herds to see this.
