    Stop- Hammer Time!

Thor is only one issue away from the “big reveal” of who is under the helmet, and we have gotten plenty of clues as to who she is, and also one big (what I assume is a) red herring, because this book has done that to me no less than twice before. Odin is on a rampage, and has even gone so far as to bring some pretty unsavory characters into the mix in Asgard, and Freya is none too happy about anything going on. The only people who seem to be okay with ANY of the stuff that is going on in this story is the new Thor, and Odinson (aka- used to be Thor) who has come to accept that he is no longer worthy.

The issue opens with a flashback story following Agent Solomon of S.H.I.E.L.D., who, in my mind, is this issues red herring- because it seems pretty heavy handed to put her FIRST THING in the issue, as in page one. That may be a bit spoiler-y, but Roz Solomon as a “deep cut” character doesn’t even come CLOSE to passing the flip test of this book. Page one- Roz Solomon, pages 2-6 ALSO ROZ. So, it would seem- she is, at least intended, to be Thor. I think that’s a big misdirect though, and that she will be someone altogether different, possibly someone who hasn’t even been featured prominently. It would be a bit anticlimactic for things to end this way, don’t you think?

But after all this bluster over Roz, the story moves back to Thor (even though the transition is again feeling like an intentional bit of connectivity between Solomon and Thor) who is doing battle with The Destroyer (again, not really a spoiler- he is more prominent on the cover than Thor is) and isn’t fairing too well; The Destroyer is being controlled by Cul the Conquerer, brother to Odin, and who is that rather unsavory character I had mentioned before. Odin, hell bent on unmasking Thor, and retrieving Mjolnir because he believes that this new Thor is just some trickery, is not thinking clearly and is behaving like a crazy person. This isn’t sitting well with Freya OR Odinson (or ANYONE, for that matter). Odinson is confronted by his mother, and they conspire to do some things behind Odin’s back, which comes to light on the last page- and without getting too spoiler-: I like where this story is headed, and I feel like this sets up next issues reveal of Thor’s true identity to be something that comes along in the natural flow of the story.

I really love this series so far- I have found Jason Aaron’s writing to be really fun and unique, and I am OBSESSED with Russell Dauterman’s artwork. I am glad that Dauterman is back on the book, after having missed an issue a few months back- I do see how the detailed work he does could make it difficult to keep up the month-to-month pace, but I really don’t want to see someone else working on this book. Jason Aaron is also a very busy man, so I am always surprised to see how all of his different writing projects maintain such a high quality.

The next issue is sure to be a most controversial and talked about book- what with the secret identity of Thor being revealed, and hopefully some more insights into what Nick Fury told Odinson during Original Sin to make him unworthy to wield Mjolnir. I hope to see THAT question answered sooner, rather than later- because that is one that I feel NEEDS to be addressed more than the identity of “new” Thor. This Thor works as a mysterious fledgling super hero, and her alter ego has become almost a non-existent aspect of the character; and I really liked that. I enjoyed the idea of not knowing, so for me, it will be a bittersweet moment when that secret is finally revealed.

I am still very excited to see where this story goes, and barring some VERY major changes to the books art and writing, or a complete change in the creative team, I don’t see this book leaving my pull list for a very long time. I imagine anyone interested in reading this book already is, but if you are even remotely interested in this series, I HIGHLY recommend you go and check it out; you wont be disappointed by this book.
