    Review: Thor #612

    The Story

Let's see..., Thor and his fellow Asgardians are now aware of the Disir, the former Valkyries that were cursed to consume Asgardian souls but never on Asgardian soil,  whom they also learned are currently attacking Hela's fortress within Mephisto’s realm. Which just happens to contain a feast souls for the demonic hunger. So in service of their departed brothers and sisters, Hela enlists Thor and Tyr to accompany her to hell to join in the effort to thwart the siege.

    The Good

Gillen offers a intriguing story that feels important and builds on previous conflict. Also Gillen's use of the "Norse Dialect" makes the issue work with a formal yet layered feel, but is certainly not over done by any means. The cover art is spectacular, yet the underworld designs in the issue aren't quite as captivating in comparison. The art in the issue overall does the job, it's original in comparison to many other titles but I wish it was more comparable to the excellent cover work. Overall this issue just feels average in the scheme of  things, and with that being said it definitely doesn't compare in-terms of the other issues more impressive deliveries.

    The Bad

Issue #611 pretty much lead me to believe this issue would be about Asgardians journeying to Hell to protect the souls of their departed brothers and sisters in a all out fierce battle. But Instead, this issue delivers a well done but sort of slow paced explanation of the Disir, Hela’s bargain with Loki, and the fears of the Asgardians.  So after a strong end in the last issue, the minimal action just does a disservice in the overall enjoyability. The worse thing about this issue however is the feeling of disconnection from the previous issue, which clearly translates negatively to the overall flow.

    The Verdict: 3.5/5

I've enjoyed Gillen's run on this title up till now, but things were just way to melancholy in this issue, with the sketch inside art letting me down in comparison to the cover, and again with the lack of action which really kills the pace. In general, I'd say this issue explains a lot but could have done it with a lot more finesse along the way.

      Welcome to Hell… 0

This issue of Thor, even though it’s something of an establishing chapter for the apparent pandemonium to come really did it for me. The Disir’s plans for victory are starting to form in revenge for their age old torture while the survivors of Siege begin to rally there forces at Hela’s request. This sees Thor and Tyr making there way into Hela’s borrowed plot of Hell from Mephisto (who is very satisfyingly devious and slimy in this issue) in an attempt to retrieve a weapon devised to put an end...
