    Review: Thor #619

Odin's back again and he isn't happy. Not at all. But with the first king of Asgard returned, what horrible fate lies for the acting king?

    The Good

Ferry gets to riff on some similar ideas he explored during his clipped stint on Mr. Miracle and I'm pleased to see him taking those ideas as far as he has. While staying true to the viking fashion, the new designs here have a Tron-style cyberpunk edge that gives the whole thing a really cool balance of classical and futuristic. And Fraction's got an amazing command of voices here - - Odin's wrathful rant against Thor, his foolish son, being the stand-out.

    The Bad

It's a little unclear as to whether young Loki is supposed to be a direct continuation of the mischief god, or a fresh slate who exhibits the same tendencies the villain's had. He uses the high speech in the audience with Odin, but then he talks a like a snot-nosed punk later on when confronted about stealing the scientist's car. If one is supposed to be an affectation, then I really can't tell. It wasn't addressed adequately.

    The Verdict - 4/5

There's something appealingly existential about this latest arc of Thor as the Aesir wrestle with the new context they've found themselves in. It's as if this series is built around the question of what happens after Ragnarok, or what these larger-than-life beings do when they know their time is waning by the day. There have been plenty of interpretations and reinterpretation of the Norse mythos over the decades, of course, yet this still feels fresh.

The story that Fraction is weaving for 5 issues now is very solid and it promises to be a combat worhty of the mightiest gods, to be a fight so rumbling that all Midgard and the 9 worlds wouldn´t be able to sleep quietly by night. The conquerers of the shadows are coming and the Asgardians will have to be bold and brave, specially because Siege has happened not from far and now they face great perill again. The story told by Odin is very good and I´m very fond with the dialogues of him and Thor,...

      Thor, huh? 0

This is definitely not Kieron Gillen's Thor. There's no denying that I loved Gillen's run on Thor and I was very sad to see him leave this particular title. Gillen's Thor was more poetic, more Shakespearean, more interesting altogether. However, I'd be lying if I said that I hate how Fraction is handling the book. I think that Fraction is making it interesting enough to keep reading, it's just very watered down. Gillen's Thor is exactly how I would imagine the perfect Thor book to be. Fraction i...
