As a new series, OMEGA MEN can be a bit tough to get into because it feels so different from everything else at DC comics. For the most part, the core of this team is made up of a quite a few new characters, and the returning characters can be pretty unfamiliar to the average DC reader. However, that's the only thing that holds this book back at all: the fact there's a chance some people won't give the book a chance. Aside from that, it's pure brilliance.

OMEGA MEN raises the bar for telling a mainstream comic book story. Tom King, Barnaby Bagenda, and Romulo Fajardo Jr present something so different that feels so familiar. OMEGA MEN has a distinct, cinematic style that hangs on beats, creating a much more fluid story and piece, rather than just trying to get the comic to the next piece of action. Splash pages are used not only as reveals but as establishing shots. I just love the way that the book moves and how the 9 panel page layouts are used. Here, we get two pages of 9 panels (18 in total) of Kalista fighting Tigorr. Each movement gets it's own panel and it works sensationally well.

Storywise, I really like what the book is doing with Kyle Rayner, who everyone thinks is dead. He's a hostage and as the issue goes on, he's being majorly played as well. More than anything else, I want to see how this all plays out and what his future is, since we're seeing Kyle as vulnerable. Emotionally, he's stable, but he has no power and is locked away. The final pages of the issue change the dynamic of what we think are the Omega Men.

OMEGA MEN is wonderful. It's a breath of fresh air and tells a story in a comic book in a completely different way. The creative team is doing something very special on this book with the look and the feel of each issue and while the series can be a little tough to get into, because there's so much unfamiliarity to it, this is a series everyone needs to check out.

@orpheus_knightfall: Hate to say it but that actually does sound pretty close minded.

Also what does Bat-Mite have to do with this

Also what does Bat-Mite have to do with this

I think what he meant was that Bat-Mite only appeals to people who are familiar with the character, and people who find his humor appealing- apparently, that means children. Which is a little insulting to adults who like the Bat-Mite books, but okay.

His point was that less-than-popular, but amazing in their own right books like Omega Men don't get much attention because DC sets up the spotlight for books like Bat-Mite, which only appeals to a very limited audience.

    Which isn't true, but hey.

I feel bad for not picking up this series. I'll either snag this up in trades or when it's on sale digitally. Currently I'm dropping 10 books from my pull list (from 25 to 15).

Wonderful or not, it won't last past one volume. DC has New 52 syndrome right now. They have lots of good ideas, but they

    • Don't hype it enough.
    • Or hype it too much and reveal too much or the wrong parts of the plot.
    • Have too many. It'd be simpler to have a bunch of "mainstream" books and a few like this.
    • Put out books called "Bat-Mite that no one but a longtime reader or a three year old would read.

    I hope this doesn't sound too closed-minded.

I believe Didio has said all books get 12 issues so it will have 2 volumes at least

But since the end of convergence dc has been making some good books, I'm waiting for secret wars to end so I can start reading some marvel books, hate reading crap with events and stuff

And from one manga fan to another I can confidently say that the great majority of comics and cartoons coming out of Japan right now are absolute garbage. Images weakest material is worth more than half the CRAP Japan is spewing out at this very moment. Manga's glory days are well behind it.

Yes, it sure does suck when you tell people you don't like the comics they like...

As for those two I'm not interested in Zombies, and I've already gotten a free sample comic from Invisible and it did not grab me

Actually I'd say as time goes on Japan seems to be getting better about fixing the problems with both anime and manga. Besides seems pretty arrogant to just write everything off like that. Not to mention that even if there isn't anything good coming out right now, there's nothing saying I can't back track and check out old stuff.

Go ahead and check out old stuff, who's stopping you? But I still have yet to fathom why you can't read Image comics. What manga/anime do you read and watch anyway?

If it's a money and time issue then fair enough, but what have you got against "Indie" comics? Manga is pretty much "indie" in format also, in that stories are finite, self-contained, genre fiction. That basically sums up your average novel -- what's the problem?

@mollydanger2210: Nothing, just don't find them appealing. Manga is different enough that it just feels like an entirely different experience altogether, which is what I'm looking for. Besides I don't want one fandom to consume the other, so a little manga, a bit of super hero comics, and you have a well balanced nerd diet.

Ok, fine. We'll leave it there. It's not my place to tell you how to think or what to do, although I entirely disagree with your thoughts and tastes on the subject. That being said though, WHY DON'T YOU READ INVINCIBLE? You say you like Superheroes so why aren't you reading the best Superhero comic in print right now?

@mollydanger2210: I'm sorry but it's like I said it just didn't grab me, the humor and characters just don't resonate with me.

Plus when I say I like superhero comics a huge part of that is getting into the legacy and history of the characters, that's half the fun, and Invincible doesn't have that, it's an isolated story that hasn't been around that long.

That is unfortunate for you because Invincible is really quite a great series. I would suggest that at some point down the line, at your own leisure, you try again with it perhaps in a few trades because a free, single issue sample somewhere in the middle of its run in isolation from the context of the story and universe as a whole isn't bound to do it justice.

But if you just don't like it, I suppose there's nothing to be done.

@mollydanger2210: I'm sure it is, but like I said, it's just not for me.

The issue was a promotion from Image to bring in new readers, it was a comic the creators were asking new readers to judge the series on, so it's not like I'm outta line by saying that it wasn't enough to reel me in, since I was the target demographic for that issue.
